i think we all need to exercise patience. the road is for all
users. i ride my roadbike a couple of times a week. when i
ride alone, i am very defensive on the road. when in group, there's
slightly more safety in numbers. however, it all boils down to
mutual respect to one another between the cyclists and the
motorists. I dun zig zag, i stay on the left lane most times.
the reason why some cyclists occupy the left lane is becos there
are some motorists who tend to pass the cyclists very close to
them, the draft can cause the cyclist to lose slight control if
he/she is not careful. i have personally encountered some drivers
who drive pass me within inches on their vehicle almost on purpose.
occupying the lane will almost certainly force the motorists to
filter out to the second lane to overtake.
when i am driving, i have an enhanced awareness of these
cyclists and give them the space they need. i can say most are
responsible cyclists. there will be a few pinheads who want to show
off, but there is still no reason to endanger their lives.
if you encounter those in a big group, i.e. 10-50 of them, just
overtake using the outermost lane. in a bigger group, it is
inevitable some cyclists sway out as it is not easy to ride in a
group of varying ride skills.
