Ice Cream Mooncake
Where to find it: Haagen-Dazs outlets during the mid autumn
festival (usually around September or October, depending on the
lunar calendar)
How did the traditional mooncake (round pastries filled with lotus
paste and salted egg yolks) eaten during the Mid-Autumn Festival
evolve into its new-fangled form? These days, even its circular
shape - a nod to folklore's moon goddess this festival commemorates
- isn't sacred anymore. Some "moon" cakes are now square. Better
yet, many of them aren't filled with the usual lotus or red bean
paste anymore. Innundated by the variety of fusion mooncakes. From
ice cream housed in coloured flour skins or decadent chocolate,
there's a different variation for every kind of palatte.
Haagen-Dazs offers a luxe dessert with a mango sorbet "yolk" and
ice cream like vanilla or strawberry covered in Belgian chocolate.
And, there're even more exotic fillings like champagne truffle,
coffee, bird's nest and wasabi-chocolate available at bakeries and
hotels.
