Why Singapore need DDs & why it's impractical to use bendies

DDs are suitable for express and long distance svcs..

You see, they have other services like 80 to relieve 30% of the MRT crowd for NEL during breakdowns.

Unfortunately services like 80 are already usually crowded to start with.

You see, they have other services like 80 to relieve 30% of the MRT crowd for NEL during breakdowns.

There may be other services like 80 and 147 that can cover during break downs, but these routes in itself are heavily utilized even on normal MRT days. Not sure if they can be of significant help unless more buses are deployed.

I see a trend where people are moving back to buses from MRT, considering the MRTs are so crowded these days. What would otherwise explain every 147 in the morning peak to be full even at Woodleigh, Potong, Boon Keng, Farrer, Little India, Dhoby Ghaut??

SBS 1000U SG

SBST should revert 81, 82, 97 and 111 back, at least 111 to Serangoon and 97 to Punggol. And 82 to Shenton Way again via MBS.

SBS2656X SG

You can see some posters posted on Hougang And Serangoon Int near the exits, stating that if there is a NEL train breakdown, you can take service 80 to Punggol, Service 87 to Sengkang, and etc. Not much on MRT Breakdown shuttles.

BusAnalayzer SG

Irrelevant to post this at Serangoon. Neither 80 nor 87 goes there!!

That will be a very long route for 97 as of today. By the time the bus comes to MBS / Harborfront, there will be bunching of buses.

Alternative buses available to be boarded when there is a NEL Train distruption.

you have said the very obvious yourself...

so why would there be the NEL breakdown shuttle when it's a SOP item for long disruptions?

I don't know. Ask SBST yourself.

You are wrong.

Once people got used to the system, practically everyone I know now liked the hub and spoke system.

And it makes far more sense than taking train only.

Or taking bus only.

The flexibility I now gain from having the liberty to alight, drink tao huey zhui, and then take another bus to another destination is tremendous.

And now taking feeder bus to my house from the MRT station is such an attractive option instead of walking 15 minutes in the sun to save 60 cents.

And perhaps you do not travel like I do on a daily basis. I can switch buses up to 3x per trip to try to find a good balance between having seats and reaching my destinations quickly.

Call it troublesome. But consider my trip to Bedok from Hougang Ave 8 this morning:

If I take the train only (NEL=>CCL=>EWL), I take around 50 minutes, including a 15 minutes walk from my house.

By contrast, despite walking 10 minutes, and then switching buses 3 times and having to wait 10 minutes, and 5 minutes for the first 2 buses (62=>25=>28), I took 40 minutes to reach Bedok MRT. And the trip was cheaper!

You should not discount the flexibility in planning trips courtesy of this new system.

Not everyone likes to transfer here and there just to go to a place, many would prefer a straight and direct way.

And not everyone is well versed in all bus services, like what service number to transfer and where to transfer. Many people find it a hassle.

I don't know. Ask SBST yourself.

What SBST does is the correct thing... I've alrdy said what's e pt of writing the bridging bus svs when it's an SOP item and come to think of it, it's only for the affected stretch?

Seems you do not even understand what e poster is for... Then you should be the one to ask SBST

The bus kids here are of 1 kind... In reality, dun think and say dunno...

If people take time to adjust, then you'll be surprised at how people with 3G phones now use sites like gothere.sg to figure out the most efficient way to travel.

As for the older folks, like an old lady I visited at her home at Bukit Merah, who prefer 1x straight bus, the option is still open, though somewhat curtailed now. She told me to go home from her place by 147. I knew better. My backside would split and be peeled like banana if I did that. So I taught her that 855=>74 is faster. And then she surprised me by telling me the fastest ways to transfer buses and trains to travel to the western areas, where I was unfamiliar with.

To assume that people are passive recipients of change glosses over the fact that they can adapt.

I used to rue the removal of services which once went to town from my place. But CCL now more than compensates that removal.

There will be still people who would prefer a direct ride.

SBS2601D SG

And what about those who value their time and backside?

Penalise them with the cursed transfer-penalty of the past?

How can you expect the bus service to be straight and direct? It's next to impossible when we all do not live at the same places and still expect to be ferried to different places to work or play.

Even in the past, with so many more pan-island bus services, most of us still had to transfer to trains and feeder buses, and trunk services were tortuously long.

And don't you find it strange that if we transfered trains in the past, we did not have to pay another flat fee, but the same was not true of bus? So bus is not an essential piece of public transport the same way train is?

To me, paying yet another flat fare for a new ride was a historical baggage from the time we had conductors and hence impossible to track the start and end-point. And now its time to move on to a more seamless form of travel.

Sv 23 is kind of awkward to have it loop at Rochor Canal Road

Why don't they just have it terminated at Queen St or Marina Centre Terminal

Sv 23 is kind of awkward to have it loop at Rochor Canal Road

Why don't they just have it terminated at Queen St or Marina Centre Terminal

I like that 23 loops at Rochor Canal road instead of terminating at Queen st. If you take the bus at Tekka Center (Little India station) - technically this should be the first stop after loop, but if you see during morning / evening peak, the bus will already have close to 30 pax who have taken it at Jalan Besar instead of walking all the way to Serangoon road to take the bus.

Hence, while on paper terminating at Queens Street Terminal would make sense, in reality people are actually boarding the bus at Jalan Besar to go to Serangoon Rd / Tampines.
