Western Harbour Tunnel hikes tolls

Tolls for the Western Harbour Tunnel will be going up this Sunday. The charges for private cars, taxis and minibuses will increase by HK$5. Motorcyclists will have to pay HK$1 more. But double-decker buses will have to pay an additional HK$13. The government said it had urged the tunnel company to consider public affordability and acceptance before hiking the tolls. A spokesman for the Coalition to Monitor Public Transport and Utilities, Richard Choi, said it was all the government's fault.

Eu urges faster action on buses

The leader of the Civic Party, legislator Audrey Eu, says there should be a law to make it a crime for the government to hoard financial reserves and not put them to good use for the public. She pointed out that according to internet service Wikipedia, Hong Kong ranks seventh in the world for per capita income. But according the a global human resources consultant, Mercer, the territory ranks 71st in terms of quality of life for residents.

Speaking on RTHK's "Letter to Hong Kong", Ms Eu said part of the reason for the disparity was the territory's dirty air. She said buses were a major polluter and the government should move faster to tackle the problem.

Ms Eu pointed out that the administration was planning a trial to see whether older buses could be fitted with devices to bring them up to more modern emission standards. But she said that even if a test run was successful, with the government's "usual time lag", it would be 2015 before the scheme could be fully implemented.

Inquiry urged into Octopus card saga

The Vice-Chairwoman of the Democratic Party, lawmaker Emily Lau, says the government and the Mass Transit Railway Corporation (MTRC) should not wait for legislators to act before investigating the sale of personal data by the Octopus Card Company.

Ms Lau has called for the establishment of an independent inquiry into the sale by the smart card issuer. But she says even though the Legislative Council is sure to pursue its own inquiry, the government and the MTRC should act on their own as soon possible.

Ms Lau said she fears the Octopus saga is just the tip of the iceberg.

Bus drivers plan action over pay

About 2,000 Kowloon Motor Bus drivers are threatening to take industrial action next Monday if their demand for a 4 percent pay rise is not met.

A KMB bus union spokesman, Eugene Wong, said the drivers would stage a work-to-rule if the company refuses to increase its offer of a 1.8 percent increase. Such action would involve waiting at a bus stop until all passengers were safely seated or standing, before moving off.

Mr Wong said drivers were also planning to stage a protest rally outside the company's headquarters on Friday. He added that the union was still open to negotiations, and he hoped the KMB management would respond.

Earlier a New World First Bus drivers' union said its members were planning to go on strike next Monday in support of their demand for a 2.2 percent pay rise.

A New World First Bus drivers' union says their strike will go ahead next Monday if their company fails to meet their demands over a pay rise. Union leaders met with management yesterday but emerged two hours later to say there'd been no breakthrough. The group's demanding a 2.2 percent pay increase but the bus company is sticking to its 1.8 percent offer. A spokesman for the union, Chung Chung-fai, said management would meet them again before the weekend. He said the drivers would not accept anything less than a 2.2 percent increase

Octopus' CEO Prudence Chan resigns

Photo:Data Image The Board of the Octopus card company has accepted the resignation of its Chief Executive Officer, Prudence Chan, following a public outcry over the company's selling of cardholders information to third parties for HK$44 million. But Ms Chan will stay on for another six months to aid various investigations and reviews into the privacy row. She'll be replaced by David Tang from Octopus' majority shareholder - the Mass Transit Railway Corporation - on an interim basis until a permanent replacement is found.

The Chairman of the Octopus card company, Lincoln Leung, apologised for the anxiety the firm has caused its cardholders and pledged to review all the data it currently holds on them. Mr Leung also said the company will donate the HK$44 million, which it made from selling cardholders data, to the Community Chest of Hong Kong.

Earlier in the day, the Secretary for Financial Services and the Treasury, K.C. Chan, demanded the Octopus card company to take immediate steps to deal with its "management and corporate governance" issues.

Bus drivers continue industrial action

Industrial action by bus drivers will continue for a second day today, although the Transport Department said services were running pretty much as normal yesterday. New World First Bus drivers will strike again, while Citybus and KMB drivers will work-to-rule over their pay dispute.

Yesterday, unions said a 2 percent pay rise could be considered, instead of the 2.2 percent they had been demanding. But New World First Bus said it was sticking to its 1.8 percent offer. The Secretary-General of the Confederation of Trade Unions, Lee Cheuk-yan, said he thought 2.2 percent was a very humble demand.

Transport officials say they will be liaising with the police and deploying staff at major roads and bus stations to monitor the traffic and transport situation today. Government chief transport officer Michael Ng said other public transport operators have been asked to strengthen services to minimise the impact of the action. He added that people should allow extra time for their journeys.

Since tix are not issued for cash payment, how do the operators there check against underpayment of bus fares?

Firstly, most BCs there open one side of the door so passengers have to tap in on one reader and in HK, the fares are FIXED for most of routes[except for XH/expressway routes].

So how to cheat!?

I find taking the Star Ferry from Tsim Sha Tsui to HK Island to be the best option and is rather cost effective. Fares for buses & MTR crossing over to HK Island are quite expensive. MTR is fast but overcrowded. Buses got stuck along the road along Cross Harbour Tunnel.

Now I realise...

On the first night, I took a bus from Tsim Sha Tsui to Mong Kok and ended up paying quite a lot of money (ard HK$8-9+), prob because I chose a long distance route which just started. I didnt realise the cheapest route was only HK$4.40!

A couple of days later after taking a closer look at the various bus svcs and bus fares, I realised I got to compare the bus fares first to avoid overpaying (in cases where you are travelling short distance and there a few routes to choose). No wonder majority of people avoided certain routes for short trips and the one with the cheapest fare was the most crowded!

For the XH/expressway routes you mentioned, how do the fare system work since they are not fixed fares?

As per what I know on certain routes like KMB53, the sectional fare is only applicable to cash paying passengers

Ah TST to Mongkok, passengers will onli take 1,1A, 2 or 6,9 and not other rts...
Eg. pple in Admiralty goin to Causeway Bay will take 5,5X rather than XHT 962...
For XHT, eg rt.112 before the Harbour, it is HKD9.30, after harbour at Causeway Bay it's HKD5.70 all the way to North Point

Drivers end 'ineffective' bus strike

Bus drivers have suspended their industrial action after two days of strikes and a work-to-rule campaign which had little effect on commuters.

Only a small number of drivers, from New World First Bus, took part in the strike. Some drivers with other companies were involved in the work-to-rule.

Four unions under the Confederation of Trade Unions said members would meet again later this month to decide whether to escalate their action in September. The drivers had been demanding a 2.2 percent pay rise, while management, while management have offered 1.8 percent.

Eugene Wong, a union organiser, said he admitted the action "had not been very effective". He added that the unions would hold a general assembly twoards the end of the month to work out common ground and then "go to the next stage".

Tram company defends move to hike fares

Hong Kong's tram operator has defended its decision to apply for a 25 percent increase in fares saying it needs the money to improve services as well as to enhance safety and reliability. This came as the company faces declining passenger numbers. It said without the fare increase, it would start to incur losses from next year. The company has applied to raise fares by HK$0.50 to HK$2.50 for adults, starting in November. Children will have to pay HK$0.30 cents more - a total of HK$1.30. Senior citizens will be spared for a year after which a HK$0.10 increase will be imposed. The company's Managing Director, Bruno Charrade, said trams would remain Hong Kong's cheapest transport mode even after the fare increase.

But a spokesman for the Coalition to Monitor Public Transport and Utilities, Richard Tsoi, said it's not the right time to hike tram fares. He warned such a move could lead to similar increases by other transport operators.

On the fare box onboard the bus, I noticed the bigger digital numbers indicate the fixed fare to pay when you board. How about the smaller digital numbers below? What does it indicate? Is it child/senior citizen fare?
