Why SMRT would insist on bendies? Double decker
is more space efficient on the road especially on busy roads like
Orchard and Suntec. Bendies for intra-town or feeder services. DDs
for trunk services like 190, 960 etc. SMRT has DDs for
190 and/or 960? It makes no
business sense to have both DDs and Bendies. SMRT need to train
both set of drivers. Moreover having only DDs or SDs, SMRT can
freely deploy any of her buses to any depots. If SBSTransit and
SMRT buses can harmonize in a bus interchanges, why the same cannot
happen in a bus depot? What prompted PTC or LTA not to have a
common depot for both bus companies?
It's amusing and silly that SMRT unable to put in
more bendies due to constraints in her depot, or is it just another
excuse to max her bus utilization rate. Which depot? Someone suggested that KJDEP or AMDEP should be
rebuilt into a multi-storey bus park that can accomodate buses of
4m and up. DDs' height is more
than 4m. It will cost SMRT a bomb as current depot infrastructure
can only accomodate SDs and bendies. If SMRT is sincere in getting DDs, LTA/PTC could
help in securing DDs bus lots in current bus depot operating by
SBSTransit. I still can't believe that bus companies cannot
co-locate in a common bus depot.
SMRT has never admit that what she did was to max
her shareholder profits,s like the hot and stuffy cabins in N-S and
E-W MRT. And now unable to put in more bendies due to her depot
unable to accomodate more of them. Number of bendies are capped by LTA, so they
can't buy bendies unless they let go of some of them.
If they can't buy bendies, then go
for DDs. Why insist on bendies? SMRT 106 and 61 were never or
seldom on SDs when they were formally operated by SBSTransit. And
that's probably more than a decade ago. Bendies are move convinient for those who are
riding for a few stops only. The problem now is, SMRT's depot
infrastructure cannot accomodate DDs. PTC/LTA should help in securing DD's bus lots for
SMRT.
Let's throw in some competition to SMRT.
Commuters in the west should not be deprived of better public
transportation. North and
North-West... K, no
wonder there are no buses plying between Woodlands, Sembawang to
NUS/NUH. Pity residents in Yew Tee and Sembawang. Newer estate like
Punggol and Buangkok have even more bus services than them.
If you wanna go to NUS/NUH from
W'lands, take 963. If Sembawang, take MRT to WDL and transfer to
963. Since now bus planning is controlled by PTC, do expect changes
sooner or later. OK. Anyway if
residents in Yew Tee and Sembawand are contented with their bus
services, perhaps the area are indeed well served by SMRT.
Unfortunately I doubt so.
What's so great of having another express bus
service 971E? It operates only
2 times a day and just only weekdays. And it even takes a Minister
to spend essential budget parliament time to make such
announcement. SBS Transit has plenty of such services.
It's to ease the crowd on the MRT.
It's a waste if it runs on weekends/PH. Do expect trunk service 971
to be introduced if 971E is a success. Over the year, SBSTransit has introduced alot
more bus services than SMRT. To me 971E not worth a mention in
parliament. Hopefully SMRT didn't kapok the 2 buses from 970 or
106.
