Service 87 was introduced in Sept 1999 in conjunction to the development of Sengkang new town, no route change since day 1. Initially was a PAC service, after about 1-2 months became FAC. Remember BNDEP MK3s and CAC N113CRBs on this route for a start.

196's route was formerly from Clementi - Marine Parade before being extended to Bedok.

Marine Parade terminal was shut down in Sept 2001 if I am not wrong.

Service 196 was extended to Bedok, whereas the other services were made to loop at Siglap Link. Service 13 and 853 (sundays / pub hol) were eventually extended to terminate at Upp East Coast terminal in Dec 2001.

In Aug 2007 service 16 was extended to Bedok. That was a few months after CSS 608 ceased opeations.

Ulu Pandan terminal

After 1981 - The terminal was a roadisde terminal. Much liike most bus terminals of the day. the timekeepers hut location is assumed to had been where the current bus stop at the terminal is standing.

before 1981 - It is unclear but mention was made that when Clementi new town was new, no bus int was in the new town. instead a "Ulu pandan terminal" located in the big car park to blk 343 and 340 was sued and that 'services called there and parked in the car park" the car park still stands. I spoke to a resident living there for many years and he does indeed recall bsues parked there as a bus terminus.

Whether this was Clementi temp ter is unclear as it weas the norm for SBS to sue big car parks as temp terminlas in new towns in the 1970s.

before 1977 - it is unclear whether the terminal existed.

heh 183 i recall seeing the service serving Upper Ayaer rajah rd. Where it goes not very sure. current assumption is Jurong ind est then AYE and then telok Bl;anagh rd vefore Chiantown.

200 - yes indeed. the service ended all the way up at Bt Pnajang Village. Poor service was cut short many times. At one time it even served to Holland rd and queesnway junction.

200 descended from the Chinese Bus Company Easy Bus which operated a set of bus routes in the South Bouna Vista rd, portsodwn rd and Clementi rd area.

209 orignsated from the Jurong Ind services. grouped with the odler 202 203 204 etc, this service served to town via the Holland rd sector.

Much later poor 209 was cut short as during the late 1970s and 180s, SBS made many mnay route rationlaisation to develop a btter bus netowrk. sv 209 was cut short to terminate at Ulu pandan HDB car park terminal. it was finally made to terminate at Clementi int when the int open.

i have fond memeories of watching the OF1417s on 209 going by alg Clementi Ave 5 while visiting my auties provision shop next to some orange docotr clinic at blk 34?

209 was later withdrawn. MRT? i guess so.

in 1977 or so, SBs wanted a bus terminla at marine Parade area, current at presently in 1977 there was a bus terminal along Marine terrace serving for then svcs 15 and 16. (much later 15 wd be integrated with a 2nd gen sv 196 to form the 196 i know and love).

also in 1977 Neptune court and the many other condos in the area were being built. This being so after the reclaimed land has pretty much settled. the residents moved in. It was amde clear that the bus terminal would be re sited to nearby the condos to better serve these residents, but wow. did they complain...they did not want the loud buses near their homes. And they argued that we already have sv 41 and some other svc going by what...we dun need the 15 and 16...

Much later eventually marine parade ter was built. the terminal was a smple roof covered area for waiting for buses under the rain. the layout was a end on saw tooth pattern if i not wrong.

1985 - 1988. taking the service to east coast park with family. always insisting on a non air-con double decker. esp if Lo2x. hahah. of coruse my parents wun let me stick my ehad out of the windows lest we have man overbaord...

1988-1996 - gg to sch . or gg to grandma home. alogn c'wqeatha ve and later shift to dover rd. when the scanias first came out i'd always "spot" them to ride on.

1996-7 - must ride Vo3x superbus.

1998-1999 JC days. msut ride 196 to sch. haha. i developed affnity to then 9621A and much later the 9664. 9591C was also my fav bus then. 9621A was my perm bus to JC in yr 2 every morning without fail.

i went into the army. 196 rides were few. except to visit realtives. go out with frens must take 196 to suntec. take 196 to parkway.

2002--2006 - NUS days - rides on 196 to dover then walk voer to NUS were common. thus my freq of riding 196 increased again. by then i had a close affinity with 196 and declared it my darling svc.

after 2006 - 196 is my officila parkway9ren living there) and suntec shopping bus. also the regular visits to dover

anyways 196 served "Jln Bt merah / lower Delta" to Jurong. As was in 1969, Jurong ind was opening. No Jurong Int then so the svc terminated at Shipyard rd

later Jurong Int opened sometime ard 1980 and svc 15 was integrated into 196. this was the hey days of 196, using Merc O305 from JRDEP and later even some nice new LO2x.>>>>196 Jurong - marine Parade.

then in 1990 or so , jurong Int is to be knocked down. 196 was not shifted to Boon lay, instead it got cut to terminate at bouna Vista. this was a frsutration for many residents in the west as they depended on the service to go Dover Rd. the true blue 1969 196 ran by Dover rd. it is an unforgivable cut of route. heck i wd depnd on the svc to go sch and dover rd visit realtives. very not happy. Parents omplained. i recalled one yr we go CNy visit and found that 196 no longer served dover rd we had to trasnfer bus... grumble grumble.

later after all those complanings and got extended to Clementi and serve back dover rd area.

196 in 1989. began a new era of hey days for 196. it ebcame partial air-con in 1989. using the latest Scania N113CRB. which i throughly enjoyed riding to sch or to town. the novelty of 196 then was being able to ride on a Lo2x thru the wide expanse of the Nicholl HW. then a 3 way crrraige road. the middle crraige was for peak hour directionlaity. the Lo2x or atleantan ride thru nicoll HW then was very fun as bus just chiong.

it was a sad day when marine Parade ter was closed. 196 became bedok - Clementi, losing its character of terminating at Marine Parade.

today 196 uses the latest Volvo B9TL and is a WAB service and is still in tis prime and hey days period. .

In 2001, Trans Island and CSS (SSB) became under SMRT Group. CSS falls under SMRT body, which means CSS became SMRT controlled until its withdrawal. CSS service can only be withdrawn, neither can be amended or introduced becuase the SSB was dissolved and SMRT take over the CSS services, becuase the routes belongs to the former SSB.

to be precise, it si SSB that got absored into TIBS.

Service 163 now and then

I used to stay in Teachers' Estate along Upp Thomon Road since 1993, remembered the bus services that passed by my house was SBS service 163 and other Tibs services. There was no bus services that had aircon buses at that time other than service 825. At that time I always loved to travel on service 163 than other Tibs buses as the fleet was more modern even though it is a full fleet of NAC MB0405 buses. Have even looked forward to service 163 converting to PAC too. My sis also depended on this service to school.

In Apr 1994 SBST introduced a FAC service 138 from YCK to Zoo, had also enjoyed the ride too as it was the 1st bus service with aircon fleets to pass thru my place at that time. Later that year service 163 was converted to PAC. Remembered my 1st aircon 163 ride from Toa Payoh back to my home, rego was SBS114G.

Service 163 went thru another upgrade in Jul 1995 when it became FAC. SBS82P was one of the perms. That was the last time ever a NAC bus to operate on service 163. Not long after in Dec 1995, service 163 was handed over to Tibs, OAC Scania Striders were introduced. In Nov 1998 service 163 got the 1st batch of new Dennis Lance fleets.

In Dec 1999 service 163 was handed back to SBS with mainly CAC MB0405s. SBS576G and SBS3832Y were one of the few perms.

Dec 2002 marked another history for service 163 when the route was extended to Sengkang. I was plased to have a direct service to Sengkang from my place. Service 163 came under full HGDEP control, as such the fleet had a minor upgrade from MB0405 fleet to Volvo MK3/MK4 fleet. That was also the 1st time when Volvo MK4s passed thru my house, I went for a few joyrides on the MK4 Striders and DM3500s.

In 2005 SBS1688K became service 163 permer after service 84 (Punggol estate temporary service) was withdrawn. This is the 2nd SBST demonstrator to be deployed to service 163 after SBS3572Y which was once perm service 163 during the early Marina Centre days.

I shifted from Teachers' Estate to Seletar Hills Estate in Mar 2008 when the place underwent EnBloc. At my new location I can still depend on service 163 from Fernvale to other locations like Thomson Plaza and Toa Payoh.

In May 2008 service 163 underwent fleet upgrade to new Euro 4 K230UB fleets. Ever since then I had always enjoyed riding on the new buses from my place. Things turn better when more new Euro 5s had been added in this year, making service 163 now having 2/3 K230UB fleet.

Till then have also been looking forward to service 163 having a full K230UB fleet (less SBS1688K) and also becoming a WAB service, maybe in near future?

error SBS1688K was presnted to SBS in 1996. it was deployed on sv 16 later sv 36./ SBS bought the bus in 1997. the bus will live out a full careers with SBS.

I'm certain that 192 never made an appearance in Princess Elizabeth. Its route covered South Canal, Pasir Panjang and eventually to Jurong. 193 came to end at Princess Elizabeth after having its route cut short from Bukit Panjang Circus around 1981. An interesting point for sv. 193 was that it had once served two 'royalties', its route displayed Princess Elizabeth at one end and Prince Edward on the other. This happened after services at Anson Rd terminal was shifted to new facilities at Prince Edward Rd.

173 was the 'pioneer' service for Princess Elizabeth and, as pointed out by 8533C, could've started operations in the pre-SBS era of the early 1970s.

i second your thoughts. However, one has tot ake note that 192 may had been operated from Ewart. or at least a certain 192A in 1972 or so.

Also provide nice comfort to paxs with Air-con. at SBS, theorghout the 1980s, it was always reducing metal noise and engine roars. I guess they wanted their final 'victory" with this conversion of the leyland victories which were indeed loud and fatige to drivers.

When SABS was a venture into airport express type services to hotles from then paya lebar airport in 1970s. in 1981 changi airport open. by 1982 SABS was failing to meet the airport express as demand drops a lot. taxis and buses (CAS services) were cheaper altho no AC>
As a result the poor SABS fleet wwas sold to SBS.

at first glance i thought the bus was some soon chow merc with AC unti and a nice modern looking front. i held that thought until the 1996 bus handbook by danny chan scolded me for being a dumb guy - i mean they say it is a renault. (hahaha). i only seen it in person but never rode it. my pranets did mange to spot it (sayangs SBS30 on sv 3 ticket)

Let me contribute the history of Woodlands Bus Services.

I'm pretty sure that you all know that Woodlands Bus Services were started by SBS in the early 1980s.

In the humble days of Woodlands Bus Services pre-dominantly in the 1970s, only service 169, 180, 182 and 208 plys from a small bus terminal in Admiralty Rd. Service 169 goes from Admiralty Rd and Marsiling Dr and continues its route to Ang Mo Kio Ave 3 via Admiralty Rd West. Services 180, 182 and 208 plys from Admiralty Rd and pass through Woodlands Town Centre.

Service 178 and 181 was believed to have been extended to Admiralty Rd terminal for a very short while in 1980 after it was being amended to call at Woodlands Bus Interhcange.

The Woodlands Bus Interchange was opened on 29 Nov 1981. Services 169, 178, 181, 204 and 208 were called at the new Interchange. Service 204 was the first service that called from the Woodlands Interchange (it was neither introduced from Admiralty Rd, and the service goes to the Sg Kadut Industral Estate, when the industrial estate is developed to resettle several existing factories from nearby rural areas). Services 180 and 182 remains at Admiralty Rd Terminal.

IN early 1982, Feeder Service 372 from Woodlands to Marsiling Rd (A loop svc) was introduced to cater the Marsiling residents.

The services were then handed over to TIBS in 1983 by phases.

To avoid confusion between Admiralty Rd and Admiralty Rd West, the Admiralty Rd Terminal was known as Marsiling Terminal because of the HDB flats in teh Marsiling area.

In late 1984, a proposed second feeder service 900 was planned for the later phase of Woodlands New Town developments. It was started off as Woodlands to Woodlands St 13 loop service in mid-1985. In late 1985, Service 204 and 208 was being merged to form service 925, with the Sg Kadut route on ordinary days (Mon-Sat) and alternate route to Kranji Way on Sunday & PHs. Service 925 was the only flat fare services which issue bus tickets and charge at a flat fare of 60c

925 - Woodlands to Sungei Kadut Ave (Loop) (Mondays to Saturdays)
925 - Woodlands to Kranji Way (Loop) (Sundays & PHs)

A thrid feeder was started in 1987. Service 901 was introduced as Woodlands - Woodlands St 81 service and thereafter, the fourth feeder, Service 902 from Woodalnds - Woodlands St 32 in 1989.

Service NS1 (a special shuttle from Woodlands to National Stadium) was introduced in 1989. This service only operates from 1800-1900 from Woodlands and After Events back to Woodlands. The operating details would be published on newspapers and posters at Woodlands Int as well as along bus stops that plies the NS1 route.

Service 926 was introduced as a Sunday & PH service with a flat fare of 70c. It plys from Woodalnds to Singapore Zoo (loop service)

Service 950 (Marsiling - Shenton Way), the first full fleet Air-Con service was introduced in 1989, with 10 Air Con Hino Ht238K buses (TIB380K to TIB389L) plying on Service 950. Other buses like the 2 OAC Nissan Diesel buses (TIB279X and TIB280R) from 852 also settled on 950. TIB390G, another Nissan bus joins the service 950 fleet.

IN 1990, 3 more services were introduced. Service 951, 952 and SS7.

Service 951 was introduced as Marsiling to Jurong Service, designated to be a Full AirCon fleet. DAF Hispanos were brought in to do service 951 as well as Service 950. This service was later amended to Boon Lay due to the closure of Jurong Int, together with 178.

Service 952 was introduced later in 1990 as Marsiling to Marina Centre, 3rd Full Aircon service. DAF Hispanos were used as well.

Service SS7, a services that plys from Woodlands to Choa Chu Kang via Bt Panjang New Town. This service was the first service to use farecards on board, along with SBS 78.

Known amendments of Service 182 was an amendment of route to Shenton Way instead of New Bridge rd.

Service 180 was withdrawn in the late 1980s.

Service 856 from Yishun to Woodlands was introduced in 1989 to cater the workers of Senoko Industral Estate.

Other significant events on the WRI opening:

The problem faced is the Service 901. Service 901 was the only service that ply from old Woodlands Int (better known as Woodlands Checkpoint Terminus). Although the routes that ply doesn't call at the new WRI Int, there were many feedbacks from residents. So TIBS decided to split out the route from 901 and introduce a new Service 904 that plys from Woodlands to Woodlands Checkpoint Terminus). Service 901 was amended to start from the new Woodlands Reg Int and plys the existing route of 901.

Service 905 and 906 were introduced to ply Woodlands Dr 50 and Woodlands Circle respectively.

On 14 July 1996, is the merger of the existing feeder services to became an intra-town service. Intratown services means its a merger of 2 existing feeder service and it calls at the Interchange after doing its 1st loop before continuing its 2nd loop. Intra-town services are useful for passengers, so that they will not have to transfer buses to get to other side of Woodlands.

858 - Was extended to Changi Airport on 2nd Nov 1997, bypassing Yishun Ave 3. It was amended to call at 2 bus stops around the Jln Kayu Bus Termianl.
900 - Re-introduced as Woodlands - Woodlands Dr 14 service in 1999. Another variant, 900A plys along Champions Way on 26 Jun 2006 and enhanced to serve Innova Pri Sch on 2 Jan 2008.
901 - Re-introduced as Woodlands - Woodlands Dr 16 service in 1999.
902 - Re-introduced as Woodlands - Republic Polytechnis service in Apr 2006. One-directional service in the mornings only.
911 - Amended to ply along St 82, Ave 4, St 83 and Ave 7 in 2001.
912 - Extended to ply along Admiralty MRT Station in 1997.
913 - No longer plys at the Woodlands Checkpoint Terminus in 2003, together with 911 and 912, hence it was skipped.

961 - Renumber from 181 and enters Marina Centre on Suns & PHs. Amneded to ply along High St in 1999 and later on ply along Lavender St, Kallang Barhu & Boon Keng Rd (deleted sector of former 5 route)
962 - Introduces as Woodlands - Sembawang Dr on 24 Jun 2001.In 2003, extended and loop at Admiralty St. On 29 MAy 2005, amended to ply along Semabwang Cres and Way.
963 - Converted to trunk service (Woodlands - Harboutfront). It was former Express 521.
964 - Inroduced as Woodlands to Woodlands Loop svc in 1997.
965 - Introduced as Woodlands to Sengkang Service on 7 Jul 2002.
966 - Introduced as Woodlands to Marine Parade service on 16 Nov 2003. It was amended to serve Bt Panjang and subsequently to Petir Rd and Dairy Farm Rd in 2007.
969 - Introduced as Woodlands to Tampiens service on 15 Apr 2001.

In addition, SBS had make a comeback to Woodlands in 2001, after 17 years of the original services that was being handed over to TIBS. Likewise TIBS make a comback as well in Sengkang as 965 plys from Woodlands to Sengkang.

161 - Introduced as Hougang Ctrl to Woodlands service in 2002.
168 - Introduced as Bedok to Woodlands service in 2001.

200 - yes indeed. the service ended all the way up at Bt Pnajang Village. Poor service was cut short many times. At one time it even served to Holland rd and queesnway junction.

200 descended from the Chinese Bus Company Easy Bus which operated a set of bus routes in the South Bouna Vista rd, portsodwn rd and Clementi rd area.

209 orignsated from the Jurong Ind services. grouped with the odler 202 203 204 etc, this service served to town via the Holland rd sector.

i have fond memeories of watching the OF1417s on 209 going by alg Clementi Ave 5 while visiting my auties provision shop next to some orange docotr clinic at blk 34?

209 was later withdrawn. MRT? i guess so.

183: New Bridge Rd - Jurong. I presume it was eventually withdrawn either ridership or MRT issue.

If I'm not wrong, tat Clementi based 209 was 154A. lol, dun forget tat time everyone had to rely on SBS for every transport needs, no MRT.

How many air con Hinos HT238Ks and Nissan UDs were there in TIBS fleet in the late 1980s??? When they were derigistered, mid 1990s??? Since when and how long did the air con Nissans did on 852???

When SBS was on the operations in Woodlands, was it Ang Mo Kio, Woodlands or Ayer Rajah depot controlled or a combination of them???

Not to forget some of the SBS NZB bodied Mercedes Benz OF1417s were painted into TIBS colors to serve SS7 because TIBS had a shortage of buses back then. Think it happened in 1989 to 1990.

Maybe next to go is to Hougang South/Central and Punngol bus services history. :)

sorry bro. u amde a mistake. the Merc OF1417 were to serve SS1. yishun shuttle down to YCK. i think. SS7 had their own lovely hino fleets. and UDs mainly. later upgrade with Hispano mercs.
