I really miss the days of better bus svs.
Gonna agree with your statement. 1970s, 1980s and till late
1990s are the periods of better bus services.

196 was a most frequented service for me in my
childhood years,.
1985 - 1988. taking the service to east coast
park with family. always insisting on a non air-con double decker.
esp if Lo2x. hahah. of coruse my parents wun let me stick my ehad
out of the windows lest we have man overbaord...
1988-1996 - gg to sch . or gg to grandma home.

first came out i'd always "spot" them to ride on.
1996-7 - must ride Vo3x
superbus.
1998-1999 JC days. msut ride 196 to sch. haha. i
developed affnity to then 9621A and much later the 9664. 9591C was
also my fav bus then. 9621A was my perm bus to JC in yr 2 every
morning without fail.
i went into the army. 196 rides were few. except
to visit realtives. go out with frens must take 196 to
suntec. take 196 to parkway.
2002--2006 - NUS days - rides on 196 to dover
then walk voer to NUS were common. thus my freq of riding 196
increased again. by then i had a close affinity with 196 and
declared it my darling svc.
after 2006 - 196 is my officila parkway9ren
living there) and suntec shopping bus. also the regular
visits to dover
2008- now - must ride
B9TL..hahah
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
196 - some info
196 did not really descend from any Chinese Bus
co nor STC services. It was an integration or new route of the
services then in 1969.
introduced in 1969, 196 served Gegek S????
D????......whatever the place is. simply it refers to lower Delta
rd (Jln Bt merah was NOT BUILT then) and where Jln Bt merah wd have
crossed. The terminal also hosued svcs 92 and 65
then.
anyways 196 served "Jln Bt merah / lower Delta"
to Jurong. As was in 1969, Jurong ind was opening. No Jurong Int
then so the svc terminated at Shipyard rd
later Jurong Int opened sometime ard 1980 and
svc 15 was integrated into 196. this was the hey days of 196, using
Merc O305 from JRDEP and later even some nice new
LO2x.>>>>196 Jurong -
marine Parade.
then in 1990 or so , jurong Int is to be knocked
down. 196 was not shifted to Boon lay, instead it got cut to
terminate at bouna Vista. this was a frsutration for many residents
in the west as they depended on the service to go Dover Rd. the
true blue 1969 196 ran by Dover rd. it is an unforgivable cut of
route. heck i wd depnd on the svc to go sch and dover rd visit
realtives. very not happy. Parents omplained. i recalled one yr we
go CNy visit and found that 196 no longer served dover rd we had to
trasnfer bus... grumble grumble.
later after all those complanings and got
extended to Clementi and serve back dover rd area.
196 in 1989. began a new era of hey days for 196. it ebcame partial air-con
in 1989. using the latest Scania N113CRB. which i throughly enjoyed
riding to sch or to town. the novelty of 196 then was being able to
ride on a Lo2x thru the wide expanse of the Nicholl HW. then a 3
way crrraige road. the middle crraige was for peak hour
directionlaity. the Lo2x or atleantan ride thru nicoll HW
then was very fun as bus just chiong.
it was a sad day when marine Parade ter was
closed. 196 became bedok -
Clementi, losing its character of
terminating at Marine Parade.
today 196 uses the latest Volvo B9TL and
is a WAB service and is still in tis prime and hey days period.
.
-> Thanks for the insight of service 196
for the its history.
It's quite a well known double decker
service throughout the past two decades, from Leyland Atlanteans to
Volvo Olympians to Volvo B9TL.
It is also of a service of the infamous
Medeka bridge accident.

ALS and CSS
the ALs scheme was introduce in 1975 to try to
'lower down car population and reduce no of cars in town ->
reduce congestion"
As part of a revoltuionary idea, the primitive
park and ride idea was introduced.
car drivers can opt for the scheme whereby they
drive to a "fringe carpark". Fringe carpark are so called because
they are at the fringe of CBD and not within CBD. With ALS in place
(aka ERP of today), those who opt for the scheme need not pay the
ALS fee entering town).
instead take the CSS bus. so CSS buses services
served from the many fringe carparks. from Dempsey to Serangoon to
newton circus car park to national Stadium. and boy were they
cheap.
All fringe car aprks were numbered by letters.
The A B C D E F G went to national stadium carparks, and the
rest of letters up to N went to other car parks. maps were
produced to show these car parks and CSS services were referred to
by car park letters. the legacy of these letters lives on as the
National Stadium Car parks still have these
Letters.
Bus stop shelters (well designed) were built at
many fringe carparks to house the car drivers who wait for CSS bus
after parking their cars. today these shelters still exist at
geylang Lor 1, Delta car park and Some at national
Stadium.
the CSS services were offered by NTUC Comfort
(blue livery) routes 1 4 and 6 etc and SSB (orange 2 5 7 8 9
etc ).
a new rego series was created
CSS 1 --100 for NTUC to use
CSS 100 to er whatever for SSB to
use
by 1977 CSS 1 -38 were in use by NTUC all Merc
O309 mini bus and SSB also use minibus CSS101 to dunno what
no.
sadly by 1977 it is discovered ridership is low
despite the limited stops idea on CSS services and the CSS
has to be deviated from its true purpose as a part of the park and
ride scheme . as such routes were amended to serve insetad to the
new towns of the day. bt merah, marine parade, bouna Vista
etc. at this point as people found the fares on CSS to eb
cheaper, they switched to CSS services.
at first standees were not allowed on the
minibuses. but haiyah so crowded. i kanna sqaushed many times on
NTUC1 from my hosue to rochard ebfore. obvisuoly the rule was
relaxed.
by 1981 the demand really was bull (red Bull)
strong and so SSB decided to buy more heavy duty buses like
10m Bedfords and big carrying capacity stuffs like Hino Rk
176. note hte Hino were numebred in the CSS178 --200 range. later
when they were retired, some very very famialr (lol) air-con
UDs took over the regto series. these are the UDs were see on
the roads today...although all may have died.
but by 1988 or so, NTUC decided to give up the
CSS adventure and withdrew their services. bye bye NTUC 1 4 and
6.
Hence the reason why we assocaite CSS with the
orange SSB buses and interchnagably refer to CSS as the ornage
buses. these bus services lived on much longer and became
renumebred to 60x , eg CSS 2 became CSS 602 and CSS5 became CSS
605
I would like to propose we remmeber the
legacy of CSS by refrain from saying CSS is assocated with orange
bus. dun forget NTUC as well
Much later some of the UDs were CAC and the
fleet also saw the introduction of Dennis lance CSS310K and a ex
TIBS bus TIB310 became CSS 294 the ex TIB DAFS lived out
their final years on CSS as well.
CSS services then began to be withdrawn in the
most chui move . cheaper bus services being withdrown. it chui-ed
me alot. very very chui. Even high demand svc 605 was
withdrawn. in the end one service stands alone CSS
608
I spent much of 2008 snapping CSS 608 UDs in a
sort of CSS themed locations or even governemnt municipal buidling
backgrounds . but finally on Aug 2008, CSS 608 ran its last bus for
the last time and so ends the 33 years of CSS.A post celebration
party saw many bus fans gather to big farwell to CSS. me
included.
today a few of the CSS buses live on in
SMRTbuses fleets. TIb1257 the Dennis lance ex CSS 608 bus will be
the only thing left to connect to CSS after 2012.
=-(
ZYX
Will the paark and ride Bus to town scheme
return in todays congested roads scenario...only time will
tell...if so CSS may yet make a return to the Singapore road
scene.

HUMBLE DAYS OF CITY SHUTTLE SERVICES
Why CSS was borned on the 16 May 1975?
This is one of the good question. CSS was introduced both by SSB
& NTUC Comfort, which alleviates the road traffic congestions
along the CBD area, which is better known as the Park And Ride
Scheme.
With the scheme, commuters can park their cars at the 16 designated
CSS fringe car parks (which I'll mentioned at the later parts) and
take the CSS services from that fringe car parks. But only a big
failure was --- the Fringe Car Parks is a wasteless facility
because not many park their cars since the car parks has many
parking lots that no one bothers to use them.

BUS ROUTES
In fact, its 11 bus routes are very sketchy, and were divided into
certain variants - which means there were AM Peak, Off Peak &
PM Peak routes for a service. The PM Peak would use A & B
initally uses as a limited stop service, whcih is for SSB ones, but
for NTUC Comfort Routes they simply run their AM Peak/OffPeak &
PM Peak routes at a fixed basis. We take a very good example --
service 3 (SSB) which plies from Chancerty Lane/Dunearn Rd to the
Upp Corss st (near OG Building), which runs on AM Peak and off peak
routes. Its off peak routes is actually a loop service and it
covers additional selective bus stops. In the PM Peak route, 3A and
3B would ply from High St to Balmoral Rd and South Bridge Rd to
Balmoral Rd respectively, and it concurrently runs from 4.30 to
7pm, with limited stops.

Ok, lets discuss about Blue Arrow services.
Blue Arrow services started as early back as 1976, bringing people
who live in private estates to the city area. THey were numbered as
30x series in the past. The service operates on weekdays and
saturdays in AM peak for citybound and PM peak for hombound. But
for the homebound direction, the service operates in the afternoon
from 12pm up to 2pm on saturdays instead of the usual PM peak
timings, and charged at 60c for adult and 20c for
students.
initially, it has 6 services and at its peak in 1977, the service
grew to 8 services.
301 - Katong Seaview Palace/Meyer Rd - Robinson Rd
302 - Bedok Gdn/Lucky Hills/Changi Rd - Robinson Rd
303 - Tai Keng Gsns and Sennett Est - Robisnon Rd
304 - Serangoon Gdn, Lor Chuan & Braddell Est - Robinson
Rd
305 - Mayflower Gdns / Sembawang Hils Dr/ Upp Thomson Rd - Robinson
Rd
306 - Eng Kong Pk - RObinson Rd
307 - Chai Chee - Tanglin Circus [was introduced in c. 1976/77,
note it didnt terminate/strat from Robinson Rd]
308 - Ang Mo Kio - Robinson Rd [was introduced in c. 1976/77]
In 1978, BA services 304 and 308 were withdrawn as the service was
poorly used and do not meet the demand for the services. BA Service
308 was introduced as a trail basis for AMK residents but at the
end with the new services/amended ones serve the AMK estate,
service 308 became unreliable and they had to utilise the other
services to get to the city.
BA service 307 was amended to start from Bedok South Rd to focus on
the inner areas of Bedok New Town via Bedok South Ave 2.
Later that year, 1978, another BA service 302 was withdrawn, when
the service was integrated with service 301 to form 301. After
1978, the service was scaled down to 4 services - 301, 303, 305,
306.
301 - Bedok Gdn - Robisnon Rd [integrated with BA 302]
303 - Tai Keng Gdns - Robinson Rd
305 - Mayflower Gdns - Robinson Rd
306 - Eng Kong Pk - Robinson Rd
In the 1980s, with more trunk services introduced at nearby bus
stops and many residents in the area owned cars (or similar
expensive ones like Mercedes-Benz Cars), the Blue Arrow services
had dwindled in terms of the passenger demand. Although In 1988, BA
service 306 was withdrawn, the latter services could not cope up
witht he demand of the passengers. So in 1989, followed up by 303
and 305 and finally 301. This marks the end of the Blue Arrow
services serving the private estates for 13 years.
-> Thanks for the insight
of Blue Arrow services. Although I have never seen them before, I
have seen them in pictures. Mostly the Mercedes Benz OF1413/LP1113
Supreme Star bodied buses are used, and the 401's Albion Vikings.
Any other bus models were used other than these
two???
Maybe let's now talk
about Serangoon bus services. I saw a faded service 318 in one of
the berths in Serangoon Interchange. Maybe time for some history
lessons.
