Seems that when SBS was formed, SBS mgmt went to Hong Kong to look at the DD fleet n mgmt. Tat was back in 1974.

Plans became formalised years later and SBS modified 1 lorry for height experiment.

Then it was finally launched in 1977 on Sv 6 (2nd) & 86. It wasn't popular as ppl fear e bus would overturn.

Good info. One article also mentioned about S'goon Gdn Ter, which was the current place of S'goon Gdn Circus.

I still recall taking svc100 from Aljunied to my aunt place at S'goon Gdn (T-Junction of YCK Rd & S'goon Gdn).

so it took SBS 2 - 2.5 yrs to get e idea from conceive to the confirmed purchase

There was this service 140 from Toa Payoh to Shenton Way. I belive this was the only DD bus service in SBS with a bus conductor long before OTS and Translink cards.

No idea. Too young to remember. But I remember 159 was already SD in 1992, when I was 6 years old.

what happened to that 86 in the end....

Service 86 was made to terminate at Hougang Ter (Temp Roadside Ter) before amending to Hougang Int on 30th Oct 1983. Sv 85, 111 & 321 were then amended to Hougang Int (St 21) with the introduction of 323.

Service 86 then merged with 97 (Jurong East to Shenton Way, Peak Hr Service) to form Service 97 from Jurong East to Hougang Int on 18th Dec 1983.

SBS tried a few models of DD in the 80s. They were:

Dennis Dominator - This bus was actually en-route to Hong Kong but stopped over in Singapore for a brief demo period.

Volvo-Ailsa B55 - The only front-engined DD SBS ever used

Volvo B10MD - The only mid-engined DD SBS ever used.

Scania BR112DH - SBS not a big fan of Scania DDs. This is the great-grandfather of the K310UD.

Mercedes-Benz O305 - Started out with the Willowbrooke model, then the Alexander demo. Eventually, 200 units were registered between 1984-86.
