Prison inmates are being taught culinary skills as part of a
programme to help them secure jobs when they are released.
1,000 inmates have undergone basic culinary training in the last
five years.
And 16 restaurants have expressed interest in hiring these inmates
upon their release.
The course takes 6 months and inmates are taught basic cooking
techniques like stir fry, deep fry, steam and bake.
Food hygiene and handling methods will be taught as well.
At the end of the course, inmates take a test which will qualify
them for a Basic Food Handler Certificate awarded by the National
Environment Agency (NEA).
The training helps prepare them for jobs in the food industry. -
