in recent news SBStransit pledge to "reduce emmisions " = " reduce carbon footprint". with global warming and all that stuffs, i guess this is a good direction to take and to save our Earth we live in.

there are many alternative fuel source buses out there now. some have even earned a EURO 5 (EURO V) classification.

it is decreed by London Law that all public buses must be EURO V or better when registered after 2009.

as u can see, these are the buses that have achieved EURO V rating.

if u search more on the net with regards to this bus, a typcial exmaple would be the

Scania K270UB ethanol -electric hyrbid fuel bbus

it uses a rather innovative type of transmission i have never heard of till just now.

its called a Electric transmission gearbox. i am no engineer but i think this type of gearbox is fitted specially for electric fuel driven bus. the Ethanol bus from (what i gather) converts the ethanol into electricty and becomes a normal electric bus.

the transmission drive is called Voith ELVO developed by voith.

HYDROGEN buses

Hydrogen fuel buses have been around for a long time. i first heard of this type of alternative fuel bus when i as in sec sch in 1996. Thats when Ballard announces they've built some sort of hydrogren bus using fuel tank to hold hydorgen.

Essentially after some 11 years upon hearing about this type of bus, the thing still works the same. Hydrogren is compressed with high pressure and in low temp such that it is in gas form. the fuel combusts in a solid tank (very solid - even if explosion occur tank wun be blown to bits) basically combust means u mix it with oxygen gas. so the whole thing go ka boom (controlled ka boom) and the exhuast is..

then comes the story of Hybrid bus.

a bus type that runs on Electricty and also... diesel. hence the name hybrid

drivers can switch to very quiet electricity ( very low emissions) when going thru a town and then switch over to loud and "emission many" diesel.

But i think that the O405s have the smelliest exhaust . Next time when a O405 leaves the bus stop , take a sniff . It smells bad, REALLY BAD.

UD got lot of white exhaust instead. Laughing I remember 370P got a whole lot of white smoke.

I believe this is a Diesel-Electric hybrid...

Electrical energy is stored when the bus applies its brakes, and stored to the batteries on the roof...

During acceleration, the bus uses the electrical energy, instead of diesel to accelerate, thus providing low noise, and low emission during pick up... (Most soot/ pollution is produced when acceleration, thus this can reduce the soot/ pollution)

Diesel only kicks in when the bus is on expressway/ long stretch of road...

In fact, its quite a good technology to reduce fuel consumption and reduce pollutions by buses.

It's called regenerative braking.

Dynamic braking is when the electricity is converted to and dissipated as heat instead.
