Screeching of brakes?

Heys, just to ask...is it just me or are the brakes of buses a bit noisier (and of a higher pitch) lately?

It gets irritating especially when you are in the bus-stop and the screech is super high pitched Rolling Eyes

High pitch are usually encountered when it is disc brakes (most notable are Mercs) ....noisier, low pitch that sounds like "hummin" is usually caused by drum brakes, most notable are LO3x, which are even sufficient to vibrate the whole bus. Shocked Laughing

Volvo B10M MKIV DM’s also had this problem before if I’m not wrong…both SBS 0970B and SBS 0983P got this problem.

The only Merc city buses with disc brakes are OC 500 LE/LF and Citaros. All previous Mercs (O 305s, O 405, etc) have all-round drum brakes.

But nonetheless, the screeching sound can be very loud and irritating at times..haha..a lot of B10Ms and VO3x have this problem..for the LO3x, it's the humming sound during braking..accommpanied by vibrations..lol.. Mr. Green

yup in singapore buses screech very loud when braking.

wear n tear of disc brakes i guess.

not much of that problem in Korea (fleet age comparable to ours)

Some LO3x give the high pitch metal scratch metal screeching sound too. 9056G of 179 used to do it. 9067A in the videos I uploaded gives a high pitch screech too.

No, definitely not. The Citaro was the first full-sized Mercedes-Benz city bus and the OC 500-series chassis were the first full-sized bus chassis to be fitted with disc brakes.

I hardly think so. The more important factor will be the braking force applied by the drivers. Instead, you should enquire on the braking efficiency by drum brakes or by disc brakes.

Actually it depends very much on the design of the braking system, but in general, disc brakes are much more powerful and are more "grabby" when compared to drum brakes.

No wonder new modern MTB uses disc brakes too...cuz stopping power is greater than rim brakes. But the main reason for disc brakes on MTB is because they are free from water and dirt....rim brakes lose their braking purpose when dirt and mud with water comes into contact with the brakes. Mr. Green
