A normal occurence?

I was taking the east bound train yesterday around 12.30pm. It was packed and can tell the train driver chionging all the way. However upon entering the tunnel after redhill station, he braked from 80km/h to 0km/h in like 8 seconds? Then there is this notable smell of solder or burning metal. I was in the last cabin at that time too. Is this normal?

Normally the train is in "auto" mode, meaning the train's speed is controlled by the computer. If the train oversped in some stretch of tracks, computers will make the train stop, like what you experienced. I've also experience it before, then got the chao ta smell. Surprised

Yeah, the MRT trains hardly reach 80km/h even though that's their max speed.

the chiong and braking are isolated incidents. normal.

the train automatically runs at a higher speed if it lags behind as the allowable safe-to-drive speed will get higher. all this is controlled by the computer, the driver only intervenes during doors opening and closing, and in extraordinary circumstances like the e-brake u experienced while going to tiong bahru~

Ya. Got driver, but he's job is to open and close the door and if for example the computer or whatever crashes, he is there to reset the mode, switch to manual and operate the train manually. Otherwise the speed of the train and braking is governed by the computer, not the driver, thats why its called "auto". Mr. Green

NEL is fully auto, opening of doors closing of doors, practically everything is computerised.
