It should still be there. For the LO3x, the lock up sounds very different when being floored. That's why I am always able to identify when the driver is flooring the bus.

Normally, it would sound like this.
(driver steps LO3x accelerator)
1. engine pitch increases
2. ZF gearbox starts whining
3. engine pitch drops (lock up)

BUT when the driver is flooring, you won't hear the engine pitch drop. You'll only be able to hear the ZF start whining and when it finally changes from 1st to 2nd gear, it'll sound like it has changed 2 gears or the gear changing takes longer than usual.

What I meant here is, Dave is entitled to his views on ZF. As mentioned by ZYX, if buses are the same everywhere, why do we have different conclusions coming out from two different countries? Do we have to have the share the same view that Voith is good and hit hard on ZF supporters?

And how can different conclusions be given a subjective label as 'misguided'? Is that how you view others who don't think the way you think?

I see no one clarifying anything once a name comes out, but I only see arrows. If this had to degrade to a name-calling war, I think I know the standard of discussions that will entail. Laughing

I personally preferred Voith over ZF for smoother transmission. The only exception I have are with the SMRT bendies.

It is bcos of the ageing ZF MKIV dms that I prefer the Voith ones. In quite a significant number of ZF DDs, the gearbox is pretty much spoilt. I doubt very much if the missing lock-up clutch and the subsequent draggy gears are modifications, one evidence is that, with the exception of 9423E, the buses get "cured". Just a matter of when they fix it I guess. Not even the LO3Xes are spared, I had taken 9172D some time ago and was disappointed to find it behaving exactly what I had expected on the mutated VO3Xes.

All the 18 179 LO3xs still have the lock-up clutch present, even after all the non-stop flooring throughout the whole journey. Laughing Just that some buses have smoother lock ups and other buses have jerky lock ups like the SMRT Nissans & Scanias (and also 9058B of 179).

I don't think you can actually lose a gear just like that? Shocked Shocked

The difference in sound between a bus being driven lightly and a bus being thrashed is very obvious. Compare these:

Stop this fighting fellas, no need for it. I am an Aussie and conditions over here are very different to the conditions in Singapore. It may well be that the Voith transmission has more success in Singapore due to the low speed requirements which therefore permit the use of an extremely low diff which in turn provides extra acceleration.

Let's leave it at that.
