COE prices steady in latest bidding exercise

The price of a Certificate of Entitlement for goods vehicles and buses has remained at S$1 for the fourth straight bidding.

The Land Transport Authority received more than 7,300 bids for February's first open bidding exercise.

While the COE price for smaller cars (Category A) dropped slightly by S$392 to S$11,489 that for cars above 1,600cc (Category B) rose S$152 to S$12,152.

The COE for motorcycles was down by S$188 to S$1,001 and the Open Category saw a rise of S$122 to S$12,721. - CNA/ch

COE nolonger a factor to control the car price, gahmen now increasing ERP and parking rate is the main concern for owner now. Fuel cost up 20% but down 3% also a big worry. Even you buy a cheap car but still end up paying on the usage charges which can end up more than the COE at its peak. So for those owner to be please do your sum b4 u buy. Parking in CBD is not cheap now and not even consider the $4 ERP yet.

COE prices for big and small cars plunge over 50%

SINGAPORE: Certificate of Entitlement (COE) prices for cars in the A and B categories have fallen over 50 percent for the month of February.

COEs for cars less than 1600 cc (Category A) dropped by S$6,289 to S$5,200, while those for cars more than 1600 cc (Category B) now cost S$6,002, down by S$6,150.

COEs for Open Category also dropped by S$917 to S$11,804.

Motorcycle COEs went down by S$100 to S$901.

The COE price for goods vehicles and buses (Category C) remained unchanged at S$1.

Some car dealers attributed the drop in COE prices to the upcoming Lunar New Year.

They said the new-year rush for new cars is over, and those who had planned on a new set of wheels have already secured them before the bidding exercise.

Another reason cited is the current fever on the property market, which might have taken the heat off the car market for now.

But car dealers expect COE prices to stabilise or even rise after the Lunar New Year.

They expect the car market to pick up soon, with more consumers collecting their bonuses during this period. - CNA/so

Lower COE premiums drive many people to car showrooms

It may be one of the best times to buy a car right now.

Distributors say the lower Certificate of Entitlement (COE) premiums for cars - down by almost 50 percent - is getting more people to visit car showrooms.

COEs for Category A cars below 1,600cc are now $5,200 while Category B - for cars above 1,600cc - stands at $6,002.

The last time the COE was this low was back in late 1991.

At Komoco Motors, things are moving fast - with the company expecting business to increase by 4 to 5 percent.

It has also ordered more of the popular model, Hyundai Avante, which now costs $53,000 - some six thousand dollars lower than last month.

Most cars have been marked down by two to three thousand dollars.

There are also increased interest in other makes - like the Nissan Latio Premium at Tan Chong Motors, now going for $54,000, down by $2,000.

"It will be a better deal if we get it now but there's only one week left so that's why I guess it's so crowded as well," said one potential buyer.

"Now that the COE has gone down, the price of the car has gone down a little, so my agent is doing the calculations for me. I've not decided yet," said another.

"COE for Cat B now is $6,002. I don't think it will go down anymore. Because why? Too low already. I keep on track with the COE. When I buy, I want to know it's a good profit. No good profit, don't buy."

He is not the only one predicting that COEs will bounce back.

Teo Hock Seng, Managing Director, Komoco Motors, said: "When there's glut and everybody come back thinking it will be cheap, the volume builds up again. Don't forget in 2001, prices dropped to $101, but that doesn't mean that it's going to stay at that level. I personally think perhaps the COE will come back to the range of $11,000 to $12,000 for Cat A and $12,000 to $13,000 for Cat B as a sort of a gauge."

Some distributors say the reduction in road tax from September is also a factor driving the interest in buying cars right now.

COE prices for cars up sharply after last month's tumble

SINGAPORE: The premiums for Certificates of Entitlement for cars have more than doubled after last month's tumble.

In the latest open bidding exercise, COE prices for cars 1,600cc and below rose to $12,602 from $5,200 last month.

For cars above 1,600cc, the premium increased by $7,500 to $13,502.

COE prices for the Open Category also rose, by $1,397 to $13,201.

The premiums for goods vehicles and buses remained unchanged at $1 while those for motorcycles spiked by $63 to $964.

Last month's low prices did not persuade some people to buy.

"When the COE is higher, I will get back more in the future. So I don't see there is any difference," said a potential car buyer.

"When you purchase a car at a higher price, definitely the price will be higher when you resell. So I don't see a reason why there is a hoo-ha to buy a car when the COE prices are low," said another.

So some buyers are pragmatic when buying a new car.

But others don't want to miss out on the chance of a good deal.

In the last bidding round, almost twice the number of bids were received as there were COEs available.

But what caused the drop the last time round?

Edmund Gin, from Cycle & Carriage Automotive, said: "People who come in during that period of time before the COE drop could not have got their car before Chinese New Year. So everybody was thinking, 'hey, I come into the showroom and I can't get a car before Chinese New Year, I might as well wait'. The buying power was not there. So that has actually caused the COE to come down to $5,000 level."

And next month, the start of the new financial year will reveal the new COE quotas - which in turn will determine the general price of COEs.

Edmund said: "General feel is based on the scrapping of cars. Over the last one year, it has reduced. So the number of cars on the road has been kept at a certain level. So we should foresee less COEs being made available."

With the latest increases in COE premiums, the prices of most cars in Category A (1,600cc and below) should go up $1,000 to $2,000, while those in Category B (above 1,600cc) will rise some $1,000. - CNA/ir

last time in order to curb congestion, lta approach was to make car less-affordable through tax n coe. but thats not stopping car owners to drive to city & causing traffic jams. so lta introduced ALS and subsequently ERP to discourage people to drive to city.

now the trend is moving towards charging drivers for actual road usage. ERP & Parking as main tools to control congestion. thats y u see coe drop from 40k 7 yrs ago to 5k last month.

COE prices up by about 10% at final round of bidding

SINGAPORE: Certificate of Entitlement (COE) prices are out and this month's figures have gone up by about 10 percent.

COEs for small and big cars (categories A and B, respectively) went up by about S$1,000.

The other categories also saw similar increases.

The only exception was the COE price for motorcycles which went up by S$37.

Industry watchers told Channel NewsAsia that the higher prices were expected as the number of COEs available for the next bidding is set to be reduced by about 16 percent.

Edmund Gin, Manager, Mitsubishi Sales, said: "From the previous round, it has gone up by S$6,000 to S$7,000 and now another S$1,000, so our prices have generally been going up about S$5,000 to S$6,000 over the last one month. Expectedly, when prices go up, our business will slow down a little bit."

COE prices rise across all categories; 15-month high for small cars

COE prices have risen across the board, with those for small cars hitting levels not seen since November 2005.

The latest open bidding exercise shows the COE for cars 1,600cc and below (category A) now costs some $600 ($601) more, at $14,601.

The COE price for cars above 1,600cc (category B), shot up by $1,100, to $15,989, while that for the Open Category is up by about $780 ($786) at $16,101.

The COE price increase is the biggest for goods vehicles and buses.

It more than doubled its previous price of $2,600 (rising by $2,689) to $5,289.

The COE for motorcycles rose by $171 to $1,184.

COE prices for vehicles go up across all categories

SINGAPORE : Certificate of Entitlement (COE) prices have gone up again.

For cars 1,600cc and below, the price rose by $1,558 to $16,159.

For cars above 1,600cc, the price was up by $1,890 to $17,879.

COEs for goods vehicles and buses went up the most - by $3,011 to $8,300.

Prices in the remaining two categories also saw a jump.

COEs for motorcyles was up $161 to $1,345. And for the open category, it was up $1,755 to $17,856.

Car dealers, Channel NewsAsia spoke to, said the rise might be due to the extra weekend of sales before bidding.

Some attributed the price increase to buyers rushing in to buy before the Goods and Services Tax is raised by 2% from July.

Car dealers are hoping COE prices will either maintain or drop slightly at least in the next round. - CNA /ls

COE prices up across the board

SINGAPORE: COE prices rose across the board in the latest bidding exercise.

The biggest jump was in the price for goods vehicles and buses, which rose by $1,700 to $10,000.

The next biggest rise was in the open category.

Here, the price rose by $1,654 to $19,510.

The third largest jump in COE prices was for big cars, which rose $1,021 to $18,900.

For cars less than 1,600cc, the COE price rose by $851 to $17,010.

For motorcycles, it went up by $7 to $1,352. - CNA/ir

Yah... I think we complain too much about high COEs and people cannot afford cars, so now COEs are not really used to control the number of cars... maybe if we start complaining about high cost of usage and the number of cars on the roads... hee... Very Happy

But considering... look at the charts at

At its peak, the COE prices can reach near $40,000.
...COE at that price, ...can still burn a reasonable large
hole in the pocket.
Maybe not an issue for some rich Singapore fellas.
but for the average Joe,
$40,000 extra to buy a car is not peanuts.
...it looks like the gahmen still intend to keep and let this
multiple-pronged barriers including ERP charges, parking charges,
as well as COE prices, etc, to curb car usage and ownership.

COE prices fall across the board

SINGAPORE: COE prices for vehicles dropped across the board in the latest bidding exercise.

The biggest fall was for goods vehicles and buses.

The COE price for that category dropped by $1,388 to $5,501.

COE prices for other categories:

Small cars (1,600cc and below) - $15,591, down by $590

Big cars (more than 1,600cc) - $18,891, down by $911

Motorcycles - $1,053, down by $199

Open category - $18,539, down by $812.

SINGAPORE : Certificate of entitlement (COE) prices for most categories fell, with the biggest drop in the big car category.

The latest open bidding exercise showed the COE for cars more than 1,600 cc down by $1,492 to $17,399, while that for smaller cars (Category A) dipped by $790 to $14,801.

The Open Category saw a drop of $1,139 to $17,400.

Also down was the COE price for goods vehicles and buses. It fell to $4,909, down by $592.

But those buying motorcycles will have to pay slightly more for their COE - it rose $29 to $1,082.

COE price for small cars down by more than 50%

SINGAPORE: The certificate of entitlement (COE) price for small cars has dropped by more than half.

In the latest COE bidding exercise, the COE for cars up to 1,600 cc is now priced at S$8,118, down from S$17,001.

Some car dealers said the lacklustre demand for COEs is seasonal but the current bearish financial markets have further hampered demand.

The COE prices for the other two car categories also decreased.

For cars more than 1600cc, COE price fell by S$1,991 to S$16,010, while the Open Category COE now costs S$17,302, down by S$701.

The COE price for motorcycles also dropped to S$1,189, down by S$62.
