Purpose of upgrading bus stops

I can understand the good intentions behind such a move. Certainly we, as commuters, have benefitted much from it.

However, bus routes are subject to amendment at a moment's notice. Today, this stretch of road has one bus service. Tomorrow, it may be gone. This results in bus shelters falling into disuse. What's more, some of these shelters have already been upgraded, with fluorescent lights and illuminated advertising panels.

Three of them come to mind: Ex-103 bus stop @ Neil Rd, one @ BDK Sth Ave 2 and ex-3 bus stop @ PSR St 71. It is still possible for the second one to be put back to good use if 38 could ply the aforesaid stretch in the direction towards BDK (after all, 3 plies a different route towards TAM). As for the other highlighted stops, I don't know what is best for them.

It does make me question at times whether the cost of upgrading bus shelters is justified under such circumstances whereby bus services can be re-routed with such ease.

Hmm, I saw the former 220 bus stop from the MRT train some time back. It looked like the brown ones found all over Redhill. Rolling Eyes

Over my place at loyang ave , the bus stop heading towards Changi village, just after TPE flyover , the bus stop is still in the old orange and yellow old shelter. I wondering whether they have plans to upgrade this bus stop.

actually i don't see the real purpose of upgrading the bus stop waste money one the orange one cannot sit? in fact i think the orange one more seats.

Adding on, the closed stretch of Mountbatten Rd, with the stop near the junction of Geylang Rd upgraded.

Other defunct stops are along Pandan Loop (2 stops along one side of the road) and one stop along Pandan Rd. All 3 stops are upgraded.

The bus stop os Blk 673 along Jurong West Ave 4 was closed a few days after upgrading. A new stop with the old orange-type shelter is placed a few metres away to cater for 2 additional services – sv99 & sv242.

It's a great irony to upgrade the bus shelters for the benefit of commuters, only to see the bus services amended the next moment such that they no longer call at that stop.

The key benefit I've noticed so far is that the new-style bus shelters are rather well-lit during the night. However, this requires more maintenance costs as well.

A side note, svc 23 can be sued as possible cover for 81/103. This could bring the disused stop @ Everton Park into good use again. THe suggested extension would be as follows:

Normal route from Tampines, Jln Besar, BencoolenSt, Middle Rd, Nth Bridge Rd, Sth Bridge Rd, Neil Rd, Eu Tong Sen St, New Bridge Rd Ter.

The stretch of Choa Chu Kang Rd (TGAB) is still in orange.

funnily, those in Seletar West Camp, and old tampines road are upgraded despite a near 0% usage rate.

also, those bus stops along Defu Ave 1 are left unused and has the advertisement boards and is still operating until today..

The Yellow and Orange ones doesnt even have lights... how are we suppose to compare... Or are they set-up for temporary use>?

cannot....23 is a key svc to bring ppl from jln besar to serangoon rd and oso bring ppl direct to sim lim.....

from my point of view, it is not possible as u c this bs is far away from the other 1 and will make return journey difficult and ppl using this bs can jus walk less den 100m to new upp changi rd or bed sth rd to take other svc

yeah.. the bus stop to/from sim lim always has very good loads, also, sv23 is also for ppl in the Jalan Besar area to take it to Serangoon Rd to take other buses home. (means if took 147 to jln besar, can take 23 to tekka and take the return journey, no need to walk).

Bringing people direct to Sim Lim is not a valid point because in iveco's proposed route, the bus will still pass by Sim Lim Square except that this time round, the stop is along Bencoolen instead of Rochor Canal.

wad i mean is it brings ppl closer to sim lim using the BS along rochor canal as no need to cross the road.....the 1 @ Bencolen is using skip BS system so the bus may nt b stoping there...and this has been argue many times....as there is more trees at the BS along rochor canal to brin ppl to Sim lim...sum times the weather jus bcomes unbearable...and if the bus stops @ bencolen...return trip haf tko be done @ sungei rd...again walk walk, which many commuters dislikes......

Bus stop upgrading and the maintenance is funded by the advertisement media company, who in turn gets the right to place advertisements there for a certain period.

serious? the work, management etc is complete funded by the ad companies?

Isn't it a waste of electricity when the new bus stops are lit throughout the night? How many passengers will be at the bus stop waiting for buses after midnight? I think only those bus stops with Night Services or served by SBST EB/SMRT WT services need to be lit throughout the night.

Good use for alighting only (in the case of your suggested service 23 route). I don't think anyone will like to board at the mentioned stop to New Bridge Rd terminal, one stop away.

As far as I know, only maintenance cost is funded by the ad media company. Upgrading cost is funded by LTA. Correct me if I'm wrong.
