SMRT Buses Rolls Out More Buses with Vehicle Location System

From Sunday, 29 August 04, the Vehicle Location System (VLS) will be introduced on another two SMRT bus services 962 and 964. This is in addition to four other SMRT buses - 173, 180, 184 and 189 that were installed with this feature earlier this month.

Passengers' feedback on the VLS, a satellite-based bus tracking system that updates bus fare stages automatically, has been positive. With VLS, Service Captains no longer update the fare stages manually. Thus human error is eradicated and passengers are assured of accurate fare deduction.

In preparation for this weekend roll out of bus services 962 and 964, our Service Captains have gone through a refresher briefing on the operation of VLS. This is to ensure that they are prepared to respond to any system errors and assist passengers with the system. In the event of a system error, Service Captains will manually update the fare stages and passengers can tap their ez-link Cards as usual.

Posters will be put up at bus interchanges and decals will be displayed at exit doors of buses to inform commuters about the VLS.

160 will be launched at 1030 as it will be launched by a minister. As for the free hoping on either 160 and 170, you can check on this page. This means a additional $0.38 rebate for adults and $0.35 rebate for students other than the standard $0.25 and $0.10 resp making the rebate $0.63 for adult and $0.45 for students (The minimum fare for adults)

WITHDRAWAL OF CSS 605

With effect from Sunday, 5 September 2004, CSS 605, which plies from Sin Ming Road Terminal to Bukit Merah Interchange will cease operation. Its last day will be Saturday, 4 September 2004.

Over the years, demand for the service has declined considerably due to resettlement of the HDB Lakeview estate as well as duplication of links to the Central Business District (CBD) area by other bus services, namely bus services 123, 124, 131, 132, 162 and 167. In particular, the service runs parallel to bus services 162 and 167 which offers passengers direct alternatives for a high percentage of journeys along Sin Ming and Shenton Way respectively.

We would like to express our thanks for the support our customers have given us throughout the years.

PREVIEW OF SENGKANG LRT WEST LOOP FOR INTERESTED FLAT APPLICANTS IN SENGKANG

SBS Transit is working with HDB to provide an exclusive preview of the West Loop of Sengkang LRT to interested buyers for their Build-To-Order (BTO) flats at Fernvale Grove in Sengkang on 4 and 5 September 2004 between 10am and 5pm.
The exclusive preview will provide interested flat buyers with a free LRT ride on the Sengkang LRT (West Loop) and enable them to see the site at Fernvale Grove where the new flats will be constructed under the BTO system.

Simon Lane, Chief Operating Officer (Rail) said, We are pleased to collaborate with HDB in providing this preview to interested flat buyers so as to give them a feel of the actual location of the Sengkang LRT station to their future residences. We hope this will go some way to facilitate the success of the HDB project.

Flat applicants with admission tickets can access the Sengkang LRT system for a single-loop trip at the Sengkang Town Centre Station. Customer Service Officers will be deployed to render assistance at the station and on the LRT vehicles.

This is the second time that SBS Transit is providing exclusive preview of its Sengkang LRT for interested buyers of HDB flats in the Sengkang area. In March last year, SBS Transit worked with HDB to provide exclusive preview of the East Loop of Sengkang LRT when HDB launched its new flats in the Central Eastern part of Sengkang

Note: Looks like SKLRT West Loop may be opening by end of the year. My guess? November.

Update: Chann Newsasia just reported that the West Loop will commence operations only in 2008.
