It was darn obvious that Tibs would lose the bid right from Day 1. Having spent a great deal of money on expanding and upgrading their fleet, I wouldn't expect them to come up with the amount needed to win the tender. SMRT was not at all involved in the whole exercise, but I feel they should have been given the licence to operate the NEL.

Seriously, there was no synergy for the merger. Because, SMRT accquired a small can and public bus operator. It became clear when DelGro initated merger with Comfort in Dec 2002

Although I hate SBST for winning NEL and take over the Norhteast, but I believe TIBS would not have operate the services until as good as SBST.

It seems like SBST dominates mainly on the Eastern regions of Singapore while SMRT dominates mostly on the Northern Western region of Singapore. However, there are new SBST bus services to Woodlands and Yishun and new SMRT bus services to Tampines. This shows signs of crossing each other so called borders. I think that there should be more crossing of borders so that commuters can experience what is it like to board the SMRT bus or a SBST bus.

BBT can be TIBS or later SMRT, so that BBT residents will enjoy a mixture of buses, which they are enjoying currently.
