I guess Eunos is a person name.

Tiong means middle in hokkien (however tiong mean cemetery in another dialect), bahru means new. So Tiong Bahru means new cemetery.

The hex (#) sign is not called sengkang in Malay. It is called dwi pangkah (lit. double crosses). The hyphen or dash (-) is called sempang. Sengkang in Malay means to have something (eg. a fishbone) stuck in your throat.

Eunos was named after a prominent Malay leader, Eunos Abdullah. He was responsible for the opening of a Malay Settlement in the area which now bears his name.
Telok Blangah - Telok means "bay" in Malay. Blangah (or belanga) is an earthenware pot.
Tanjong Kling - Tanjong means "headland" in Malay. Kling was a term used long ago to refer to Indians (even today but to a much lesser extent as it was considered to be impolite). It was derived from the name of a powerful Indian state called Kalinga.
Bukit Purmei - Bukit means hill and Purmei (or permai) means peaceful.

The (-) is also called Sengkang, hence the phrase "Kosong empat sengkang enam empat tiga" or "Zero four dash six four three" (#04-643).

Other meanings of Sengkang are; long plank to lock a door (in olden days), an object to keep a mouth opened and walking with the legs wide apart.

May I also note that the pronounciation of Sengkang in Malay is "Sng-kaang". I believe the Chinese pronounciation of Sengkang is "Sayng-kaang", right?

Nah, I did a check with a Malay dictionary and found that you're right too. The dash (-) can be called either sempang or sengkang. Brother Superbus is right about its other meaning (ie. a plank that is used a stopper). My meaning was wrong. Tersengkang means always open or exposed because of something. A thousand apologies.

I guess Simei got its name from Jalan Soo Bee (Soo Bee is Si Mei in dialect), which still exists and runs paraell to Simei Ave.
