A little off topic, but on the topic of Sv 56...

Why doesnt it loop at Marina Centre like all other SBS services (except Sv 195 but it has to terminate there)? Its route is quite short, only about 20 fare stages, while others like Sv 162 or Sv 97 are much longer.

It's more to do with nostalgia. Don't forget Sv. 77 used to be a SBST service too. Sv. 58 was actually the first to terminate at Marina Center Ter. When Sv. 58 got withdrawn and Sv. 56 extended, Sv. 56 took its place.

Marina Centre - Farrer Rd, looping outside at Khaem Hock Rd junction with Bt Timah/Dunearn Rd.

It was introduced in 1995, extended a year later.

If I remember correctly, service 186 used to ply Shenton Way - Farrer Rd before terminating at St Michael's.

yes the same way. That was stated in 1993 TL Guide. St Mikes was found in 1995 guide. Which means it was amended in 1993/1994.

Let me add in the blanks for 1994 for you since I have the 1994 TL Guide. Yes, in the 1994 TL Guide, it is stated that 186 runs from Shenton Way to St Michael's.
