If I'm not wrong, the Siemens trains as well as the new Kawasaki trains are fitted with ZF gearboxes, which is why these trains have those distinctive sounds as described in earlier posts.

Yup. The acceleration into the second and third gear is very distinct also ( piiiioooooooooooooooourrrrr ) but its much more muted than that for buses and is more bass sounding.

I used to call those trains "farting trains". This is because just before they stop, they always let off one loud psssssssss. However, the award has to go to the new black kawasakis for the longest and loudest hiss.

Also, the glass of the Siemens trains are branded, they are made by glastroch of Switzerland. The month of fabrication is imprinted on the glass as well.

EMUs (electric multiple units) don't have multiple gears. Instead, the AC Traction motors are actually going into different frequencies, and they have VVVF(variable voltage, variable frequency) systems.
