Bus stops on Expressways

Why do expressways have bus stops…like PIE (Jalan Toa Payoh) and sections of the AYE after Clementi Rd…aren’t they supposed to be expressways and thus no stops?

For your info, these stretches of the expressways you mentioned are normal roads before, the bus stops there have existed then if I'm not wrong.

AYE is formerly called Ayer Rajah Rd (between Alexandra Rd and Clementi Rd) and Upper Ayer Rajah Rd (between Clementi Rd and Jurong Town Hall Rd).

Part of PIE used to be Paya Lebar Way, Jln Kolam Ayer, Jln Toa Payoh and Whitley Rd.

Yes, that is true. In the case of AYE, the names Ayer Rajah Road and Upper Ayer Rajah Road have more or less disappeared from use.

But the former roads of PIE are still in use and referenced in street directories.

And whats more they are quite heavyily used(especially during peak), so they they still survive

Are these bus stops only on the slip roads leading to the expressway, or are they on the expressway itself?

Some are on the expressways itself, with bus bays, for example AYE. Others are located along slip roads.

That's true. Jln TPY and Whitley Rd bus stops have existed even before the PIE was built. Don't forget that the bus stops were preserved since there's quite a high demand. For instance, TPE, KJE, BKE, etc do not have such stops.
