What were the routes of these services during that time? Thanks. 75 (Clementi - ?) 186 (Clementi - Prince Edward) 209 (Clementi - Crawford St) 141 and 151 f...

Ok, I am basing my findings on the 1983, 1984 and 1988 street directories.

In 1984, there were 2 roads, Upper Changi Road and Upper Changi Road East which are linked together at one point. There is a split just after Somapah Road, near Changkat Changi Primary School there. There is also no presence of Simei Road at that time. Only Sunbird Ave existed then. See the image below.

I assume that Service 9 entered the right side of the split roads, thus Upper Changi Road between Bedok and Changi Point. Either that, or it turns right at Somapah Road (note the small road between Upper Changi Road and Upper Changi Road East with an arrow) and left again at Upper Changi Road (similar to current Service 2). However, this is just my presumption.

For further information. By 1988, this split road and the small Somapah Road were gone, to be replaced by current day Simei Rd which is still under construction then (shown as u/c inside the 1988 directory).

The_Bus_Guide SG

All righty then. What buses were normally used in those days on the above services (75, 141, 151, 186, 209)?

Superbus SG

I checked with my father and yes, Service 9 turned right into Upper Changi Road at the split junction. Interestingly, the "Upp Changi Rd" between Simei Rd and Upp Changi Rd East can still be seen up to this day.

Cheers and warm regards

Thanks for sloving my query. Smile

Note that Somapah terminal is not indicated on the map shown above. I remember that service 9 turned right into a small road after Somapah termianl, so the highest possibilty is that it used Somapah Rd, also it may used Gulega Rd but the chance is low.

At the split road junction, is it considered turning left or going straight when proceeding from Upp Changi Rd to Upp Changi Rd East?

tranquilice SG

Thanks for taking the troubles to type the routes out. Smile

For service 141, wonder why the bus ply Clemeanceau Ave in only one direction.

For service 151, I think this was faster to get from Toa Payoh to Outram Park than service 143.

tranquilice SG

Note that present service 145 covers the route of service 186 between C'wealth Ave and Keppel Rd, when service 145 was amended from Kent Ridge to Buona Vista.

I also known of a private service 186 that ply the same route as SBS service 186 in the 1990s.

tranquilice SG

But I believed that it used Somapah Rd instead. (see my previous post)

delonchew SG

No problem. Hope it could be of some help to your queries.

As I don't know the road conditions then, I am thus not very sure of what was the exact route that 9 could have taken. But, I am more inclined to think that the route that 9 took at this split road was exactly what Superbus had mentioned, that it took the right side leading to Upper Changi Road. However, I believe you are not wrong in stating that 9 turned right after Somapah Terminal. Note that Somapah Terminal was not mentioned in this '84 directory. Now look at this image below.

This was taken out of a '88 street directory of the same area. I must apologise as I only have the '88 version and none of those between '84 and '88. Now, Somapah Terminal is present but the split roads is gone. This is replaced by a road that is similar to current day Simei Road (look at the u/c). So, I assume that this is the point where 9 turned right and left again to take the route that is similar to current day 2.

To your other question, I believe that the split road here is similar to the one in Scotts Road. This is, however, my presumption only.

tranquilice SG

Yes, I also wondered why Somapah terminal is not indicated in the 1984 directory, since it started operations in around 1981 (?)

So for now, there are 2 route possibilites that service 9 plied, that is, the split road at Upp Changi Rd/Upp Changi Rd East and Somapah Rd connecting Upp Changi Rd and Upp Changi Rd East.

For those interested to see how Chai Chee Terminal looks like, there is a small shot of it showing the boarding facilities (with service 18 in the foreground) on the cover of the 1979 Bedok New Bus Plan book. The book is being displayed in the TIBS shop at Yishun Interchange.

The boarding facilities reminds me of current Clementi Interchange.

SBS9818A SG

Is the place as cramped as Clementi Int?

delonchew SG

Yes it does look a little like the Clementi Interchange. Quite cramped in my opinion.

I used to pester my mum to bring me to Chai Chee market to eat fishball noodles behind Chai Chee Terminal because I used to stay there. Hehehe.

SBS9818A SG

And look at buses at the same time right? Mr. Green
