Eulogy of certain service routes?

I think maybe we should start a eulogy for certain service routes which have since been withdrawn. I will start with one, which is incomplete, until I finish my research:

HarbourFront (Former World Trade Centre) Sengkang
[Unknown Date]Svc 860 was born to TIBS to ply undeveloped Sengkang.
[Unknown Date]Svc 860 was merged (fully air-conditioned) by TIBS to ply the route between the World Trade Centre and Sengkang as a link for Sengkang residents to the city. Bus service was wildly received. (If I am not wrong, Bendys were used most of the time)

[Unknown Date]Svc 865 is transferred to SBS control, later changed it's identity to 85. (Double deckers are used)

[27 July 2003]Svc 85 is removed from service with the introduction of the North East Line, under the bus service rationalisation exercise.

There was another sv. 85 which was withdrawn in 1990. It travelled from Hougang Inter. and looped at Sims Ave (Kallang). Albion Vikings were used.

Any idea why Svc 84 was removed? Question

Actually, before svc 865 was introduced, TIBS introduced svc 860 which plys the route of the current SBST 119. Later when sengkang was more developed, then they extended 860 to harbourfront and renamed it 865. Then the story continues.....

Svc 84 was actually merged with svc 864 when SBST was renaming its sengkang services then.

864 -> 80
865 -> 85
866 -> 86....

At that time, svc 864's route was very similar to svc 84. So I think that is why SBST decided to merge the 2 svcs then. But what i dont understand is that why must they change the svc no to 80, why cant they keep 84? This svc no (84) had been with hougang residents since the 80s......

I'm sure sv. 84 will be 'reborn' in Hougang / Sengkang / Punggol, just like sv. 83. The old sv. 83 ran from Punggol to New Bridge Rd using DM Volvo B10M Mk II. It was withdrawn in 1993.

The story of sv. 331

Sv. 331 started out as sv. 241, a feeder service between Jurong Interchange and Teban / Pandan Gardens. When Jurong Interchange was closed in 1990, sv. 241 was amended to Jurong East Interchange. Buses used were the MB OF1413s and 1417s (NZMB), which were subsequently replaced by O405s. In 1999, sv. 241 was re-numbered as sv. 331, to starndadize the sv. nos. of Jurong East feeder routes which begin with 33x. Gone are the O405s and in came the B10M Mk IIs.

The closure of Teban Gardens Terminal in 2002 saw the amendment of sv. 143 to Jurong East Interchange. Sv. 331 was withdrawn while amendments were made to sv. 78 and 51 to cover its loss.

Service 84 is already "reborn", currently as peak hour service between Punggol Station and Punggol East.

Isn't Teban Gardens Terminal JRDEP? After JRDEP was integrated with JRBP to form SLBP Sv. 143 was amended to Jurong East. I used to enjoy taking Sv. 143 right to the end of Teban Gardens Rd.

The Story of sv. 20

Sv. 20 had been around for long time. The Singapore Traction Company (STC) had a sv. 20 which ran from Siglap - Raffles Quay. I don't know if it was related to the SBS sv.20 which I affectionately remembered. This is because, sv. 20 was one of only 2 services which used to terminate at Ghim Moh, where I used to live as a little boy.

In the early 1980s, sv. 20 used to end at Chai Chee Terminus, which was then located along New Upper Changi Rd; between the junction of Chai Chee Rd and Blk 32. It was moved to Bedok when the interchange was completed. The buses used were mainly Volvo B57s and Mercedes OF1417s.

A rationalization of bus services with the opening of the East-West MRT line in 1989 signalled the end of sv. 20. It was integrated with sv. 100 whereby the latter's route was extended from World Trade Centre Terminus to Ghim Moh Terminus.

Sv. 20 made a comeback in 1994 but as a peak-hour service between Sims Place and St Georges' Estate. It used Mercedes 811Ds.

It's second demise came in 2001. Sv. 20 was integrated again. This time with sv. 125.

Honestly I was thinking it was pointless for Sv. 20 to begin its route from Sims Place. St Michael's or TPY would have been a much better choice, but seeing the O811Ds belonged to HGDEP, Sims Place was the nearest HGDEP-controlled terminal.

Sv. 198 originally used to terminate at Sims Place as well, from Boon Lay, and Sv. 64 looped at Circuit Rd from Mei Chin Rd I believe. A while back, SBS wanted to remove Sv. 64, but that caused a big hue and cry, thus Sv. 198 was cut short to Bukit Merah, and Sv. 64 amended to terminate at Sims Place instead.

Bendys were NEVER used on 865. Only 864 had a couple of bendys (TIB886T, TIB887R)

Service 64 originally operated from MacPherson terminal along Circuit Rd and loop along Mei Chin Rd, via Orchard Blvd and Tanglin Rd. It was later amended to ply Ganges Ave, Havelock Rd and Clemenceau Ave to cover service 198 route and also to eliminate duplication with former route of service 111 between Bendemeer Rd and Commonwealth Ave.

Services 85, 860 and 865

SBST 85 was first introduced to ply between Hougang interchange (now Hougang South interchange) and Lor 3 Geylang (loop service). It was later withdrawn in the early 90s probably due to poor demand.

On Friday 12 June 1998, Tibs service 860 was introduced to ply between Sengkang terminal and Hougang St 21 (loop service). It plied one direction along Compassvale Rd towards Hougang, and one direction along Punggol Rd, Compassvale Dr and Compassvale Rd towards Sengkang terminal.

Later on Sunday 13 December 1998, service 860 was extended to World Trade Centre terminal (now HarbourFront interchange) and was renumbered service 865.

On Sunday 25 July 1999, SBST took over service 865 from Tibs.

On Sunday 12 December 1999, SBST service 865 was renumbered service 85, and continue to operate with this service number to its last day on Saturday 26 July 2003.

Services 72, 80, 84 and 864

SBST service 72, in the 80s and early 90s, operated between Serangoon interchange and Tanjong Rhu (loop service) via Boundary Rd, Upp Paya Lebar Rd, Paya Lebar Rd, Tanjong Katong Rd, Mountbatten Rd and Fort Rd. It was later withdrawn in the early 90s when services 40 and 158 were amended.

Service 72 was reintroduced in 1996, to operate between Yio Chu Kang terminal and Ang Mo Kio Ave 5.

SBST service 80 was introduced in September 1996 to operate between Tampines interchange and Hougang Central interchange. That was when SBST service 81 skipped a part of Tampines Rd and plied TPE instead, with service 80 covering this part of Tampines Rd.

In March 1998, services 72 and 80 were integrated to become current service 72, which operated between Yio Chu Kang terminal and Tampines interchange skipping Hougang Central, and only to serve Hougang Central again from Saturday, 21 June 2003.

SBST service 84 started operating between Upp Serangoon terminal and World Trade Centre terminal. It was later cut short to Hougang Central interchange when it opened in 1993.

Tibs service 864 was introduced on Sunday 15 November 1998, to operate between Sengkang terminal and Marina Centre terminal. It was later operated by SBST from Sunday 25 July 1999.

On Sunday 12 December 1999, SBST services 84 and 864 were integrated to become current service 80.

On Sunday 14 September 2003, SBST service 84 was reintroduced as a temporary service to ply between Punggol station and Punggol Field Rd during the peak hours.

Services 140, 146, 148, 149, 150 and 152

SBST service 140 operated between Toa Payoh interchange and Penang Rd (loop service), plying the same route with SBST service 143 up to Orchard Rd. It was withdrawn to remove duplication with the MRT and service 143.

SBST service 146 operated between Toa Payoh interchange and Clementi interchange, via Lor 6 Toa Payoh, Kim Keat Ave, Jln Toa Payoh, Bendemeer Rd, Jln Besar, Bencoolen St, Bras Basah Rd, Connaught Dr, Collyer Quay, Raffles Quay, Shenton Way, Keppel Rd, Telok Blangah Rd, Alexandra Rd, AYE, North Buona Vista Rd, Dover Rd, Dover Ave and Commonwealth Ave West. It was withdrawn in the late 80s.

SBST service 148 first operated between Toa Payoh interchange and Buona Vista terminal. It was withdrawn in the 80s, but reintroduced to operate between Clementi interchange and Lor 1 Geylang terminal in June 1992, when SBST service 147 integrated with SBST service 83. However, service 148 was withdrawn 5 months later, in November 1992, due to poor demand.

SBST service 149 operated between Toa Payoh interchange and Changi Airport PTB. It was later integrated with SBST service 31 (loop service between Tampines interchange and Stadium Blvd) in 1993 to become the current service 31, while the link between Marine Parade and Changi Airport is first covered by SBST service 16 and now by SBST service 36. When service 149 was integrated with service 31, private bus service 646 was introduced to ply the entire route of service 149.

SBST service 150 operated between Toa Payoh interchange and Crawford St terminal, via Lor 6, Lor 4, Braddell Rd, Thomson Rd, Kampong Java Rd, Bt Timah Rd, Sungei Rd, Bencoolen St, Middle Rd and Beach Rd. It was withdrawn in late 80s.

SBST service 152 operated between Bedok and Toa Payoh interchange. It was later integrated with service 28 (loop service between Tampines and Bedok interchanges), to become the current service 28.

Service 162

Formally an Ang Mo Kio to Geylang / Kallang service. It was withdrawn after MRT commence operations. It has it's second life in Feb 2001 (or 2002?), as a Yio Chu Kang / Shenton Way / Suntec City service.

Service 168

Formally an Ang Mo Kio to Orchard service. It was withdrawn after MRT commence operations. It has it's second life in 2001, as a Bedok / Tampines / Woodlands service.

Bishan Svcs: 54, 55, 56, 57, 58, 59, 104, 134, 353, 410

Originally Bishan Int had Sv. 56 - Sv. 59. Sv. 56 was from Bishan looping at TPY Int, Sv. 57 was like present-day Sv. 410 except it looped at Sector A Sin Ming. Sv. 58 was from Bishan - Marina Center except it went by Bendemeer, Lavender and Victoria. Sv. 59 was from Bishan - Jln Kayu.

In late 80's or early '90s, Sv. 58 and Sv. 56 were integrated to form Sv. 56 from Bishan - Marina Center, with the original Sv. 56 route intact, and the Sv. 58 route totally withdrawn.

Sv. 57 was converted into Townlink Sv. 410 when Bishan St 22 from Marymount Rd to Bishan Rd opened in 1992, and had green/white plate service.

Sv. 59 was cut short to AMK in early 90's, eventually TIBS took over Jln Kayu in 1994, extended it to Sengkang in 1997 and renumbered it Sv. 866, in July 99 SBS took the service over and it became today's Sv. 86 in 2000, solely operated by HGDEP.

Sv. 55 originally terminated at AMK but was extended to Bishan via AMK Ave 10 in 1994.

Sv. 134 was cut short to Bishan from AMK in 1992 due to poor demand. Sv. 105 was rerouted with Sv. 104 to swap roads, with Sv. 104 coming by Bishan MRT and Sv. 105 going by Lor Chuan. In 1993 however, SBST decided to integrate Sv. 104 and Sv. 134 to form today's Sv. 54, which also goes to New Bridge Rd. Sv. 156 was then introduced to bridge the gap from S'goon Int to Bishan MRT. In 2000, Sv. 156 was extended to Sengkang.

Sv. 353 was a very short-lived service that was eventually renumbered Sv. 57 and rerouted.
