Amendments to SBS Transit service 401

From Sunday 7 June 2003, service 401 will be extended to Orchard Road. This service will no longer terminate at Lorong 1 Geylang.

Service 401 will be going to Orchard via Nicoll Highway and the rest of the route is similar to service 14. Other operating details remain unchanged.

Quite shocking news for me as I didn't expect this service to be extended to Orchard Rd, considering the service's load and frequency.

The service was mainly extended for tourists to hop on and go to the East Coast Park from the city. It would be more worthwhile(possibly) if it was daily.

The posters announcing this change have been put up all over Bedok Interchange since mid-week. The poster says 7 June, so it might be Saturday instead of Sunday. Then Svc 401 will operate on Saturdays, Sundays & Public Holidays.

I think that SBST has made a bad decision to let the service loop along Tomlinson Rd and also the service should ply Marina Centre instead of Nicoll Highway.

Even so, Sv. 401 still serves the whole of Orchard Rd, ideal for tourists to hop on and go to the beach.

But the thing is, service 401 cannot serve the whole of East Coast Park due to the directional problem of East Coast Park Service Road, so that's why the service can only serve between Fort Road and Laguna Flyover, but the part of the park between Laguna Flyover and National Sailing Centre is skipped. However, service 36 and 646 has a stop beside car-park F3, but opposite the road (ECP airport bound), there is no stop due to no underpass available.

I have a question here, do you think another bus service is needed to serve the park between Laguna Flyover and National Sailing Centre? (Do note that East Coast Park Service Road is one-way towards airport between somewhere near Bayshore underpass and car-park F3, and you can only turn back to ECP city bound at Tanah Merah Flyover [Changi Coast Road], where the end of East Coast Park Service Road [airport bound] is)

Here is the full information of the extension of Service 401.

From Saturday, 7 June 2003, Service 401 will be extended to Orchard Road. The service will operate on Saturdays from 2pm to 10pm for a trial period of 3 months. It will operate from 10pm to 8pm on Sundays and P. Holidays. Frequency remains at between 25 to 30 minutes.

Note that service 401 will turn into Stadium Crescent and Stadium Rd first before proceeding to Nicoll Highway.

Notice that there's an error in the poster, the service should be skipping 5 stops along Mountbatten Rd instead of 4.

Do you expect to see any fleet changes on this service after the amendment? If yes, what are the types of buses you would expect?

SBST seem to have excess of buses right now, the usual Mk IIIs or Mk IVs can be used.

I have to disagree with this. Even the PA registered MB buses are used on basic bus services, e.g. service 195 and 282.

I don't expect to see MK4 on this service after the extension.

Nope, I don't expect to see any fleet changes, at least not yet. The usual N113s or the Mk3s would be used.

If that is the case, it simply means SBST has extra PA-registered buses after fulfilling the need for JI services and chartering.
