joyanz SG just curious how many of u drive auto car now? which model? i see less and less manual cars on the roads.
HyuugaNeji SG roads in singapore too congested and too many traffic lights. No point driving manual. I drive a honda civic (manual) before. Currently drive a toyota altis (auto). Both are good but i would prefer both to be auto
richong 3216 SG Unless you are driving a sports car, auto is the name of the game & all must get used to it.
stellazio SG in traffic jams which is usually the case in singapore, auto would be easier and more relaxing.
Ferrari_RoXz SG If one would to be planning to take a driver's licence, it's better to choose manual than auto as since if you are getting a licience, why not get a full one? But i understand some people cannot coordinate their clutch and gears so taking auto would suit them better. Manual is more fun compared to auto but auto is better suited for city driving.
alleggerita SG Yeah..manual more fun..especially when you stall at traffic lights and block people behind you, even more fun! That's what happened during my driving lessons when my biting point still not good enough..
alleggerita SG But here's why I think manual cars are so useless in SG.. 1) People always say manual has more control..attributing it to engine braking..but seriously, I believe 95% of people driving manual cars don't utilize engine braking..it's a waste of fuel..most will just engage neutral when they see from afar the traffic light is red..which one will go change down to fourth gear, then third gear, then second gear, then come to a stop? 2) Engine braking can also be used when going downhill..but I also don't think anyone in SG will be so religious to change to a lower gear to utilize engine braking because, once again, waste fuel.. 3) Now even automatic gearboxes have manual override functions already..not all, but most of them have it..and if you are game enough, you can use the manual override function to lower a gear if you so want engine braking..but seriously, I don't see any SGreans using manual override too..
MidnightK SG HAHA!! i only stalled on my first lesson.. then outside never!! driving manual cars more alert.. must shift gear all these.. auto will doze off.. and besides, manual car overtaking got more power as can down shift..
alleggerita SG Aiyah, give an auto car's throttle a sudden stab and it'll also downshift for you.. But throttle response for manual cars is much much much better..I tried my dad's Kia Picanto..the rev needle rise damn fast..immediate response! But my uncle's S40 2.4i, I also tried stepping on the accelerator before, and I swear there's a one second lag before revs rise..
MidnightK SG haha.. of course lah.. you shift gear yourself.. then immediately engage the gear.. all my relatives car is auto also.. guess no chance till i get my own
Vigelic SG agreed.. but then there's a reason for the delay in the auto car.. like some auto cars have a "sport" mode or a "manual shift" mode.. if u buy a car that's designed for comfort and luxury, the shifts will be very early and any response will be very "gentle" pressing the sport mode will make the throttle response immediate and shift ups at higher revs to improve acceleration..
sinicker SG manual license, been driving an auto car for a long, long time. i like the idea of having a manual car.. got more power in your hands... but if we think of all the multi storey carparks or shopping mall basement carparks... give me an auto car please.
T.Ryousuke SG Nowadays steptronic r very common, playing with gear r when u like to speed and beat others on green light, other than that pickup/ overtake is faster than auto, end of the day is yr skill that count which is how fast u change gear. Last time auto gearbox r jerky and less reliable.
alleggerita SG The Geartronic gearbox in the S40 doesn't have "sport" and "comfort" mode..there's "winter" mode though..and it slows the throttle response down to the pace of a tortoise.. Edit: Typo..
