What is an
Acoustic Guitar and Answers to Other Questions that Plague
You.
The Bottom Line An acoustic guitar is a type of
instrument that not only sounds beautiful, but is also a ton of fun
to play.
What is an acoustic guitar? The question almost sounds like a joke,
although Im not sure what the punch line is. Honestly, I dont
even know how to answer that questionan acoustic guitar is an
acoustic guitar. It takes a genius to come up with things like
that, believe me, but at least I can be of some service to you and
answer questions delving around the issue of acoustic
guitars.
First and foremost, a guitar is an instrument. Sure, it can be used
for breaking things and cracking walnuts in half, but its original
purpose was to make some sort of music. The guitar is a medium
sized stringed instrument that is played by holding down the
desired strings with one hand and plucking/strumming the strings on
the other end with ones other hand. As you press down on a string
and pluck it with the other hand, a pitch will be emitted. The
higher that you hold the string, the higher the note played will
be. Typically, guitars have six strings which are tuned E, A, d, g,
b, e from top to bottom (or thickest density string to the
thinnest). However, some specialized guitars will have up to 7, 8,
or even 12 strings.
The word acoustic means that the instrument doesnt use any sort
of electronics to amplify its sound and thus relies on the internal
vibrations (or acoustics) in the body of the guitar for sound. When
a note is plucked, the string vibrates a certain frequency. As we
know from physics class, different frequencies will cause various
pitches to be heard. All of these notes vibrate and echo in the
hollow body of the acoustic guitar in such a way that the sound is
amplified. The big difference between acoustic and electric guitars
is that an acoustic guitar has a body which amplifies the sound,
while an electric guitar relies on electronics to amplify its sound
(and thus is slim and does not have the body). Dont get me wrong,
there are more differences between electric and acoustic guitars
than this, but thats the dumbed down definition.
So what is the purpose of a guitar? Oh there are so many possible
answers to this question. One person might say that the purpose of
any instrument is to broaden ones horizons and have a good time.
Another person would say that the main purpose of a guitar is to
receive fame and fortune
and get laid. Hell, some say that a
guitars best use is for smashing things, such as amplifiers and
walnuts, in half. All in all, I would say that a guitars purpose
is to emit sound, which in turn produces some sort of enjoyment for
the musician and anyone that dares to listen.
The guitar is an instrument that can be played in many ways and in
millions of different styles. Thus, it is a very versatile
instrument. Generally, the basic idea of playing the guitar is a
lot like the piano. On the piano, ones hands press down on the
keyboard to play notes. The notes can be played alone one at a time
or together in chords, or even in a combination of both (choral
melodies). On the guitar, it is the same way in theory, with one
exception; one hand presses down on the strings while the other
hand hits the strings in order to make them vibrate.
One can hit the strings, causing them to vibrate, in many ways. One
way is by plucking the strings with ones fingers, which is usually
referred to as fingerstyle. Another way is by using a little
piece of plastic, which is typically in the shape of a rounded
triangle, to pluck or strum the strings. Less widely used is an
electronic device that sends out a pulse, which in turn caused the
strings to vibrate-- a cool invention to say the least. Each of
these different methods will sound differently, and thus
fingerstyle is typically considered to be for classical music and
bluegrass, while a pick is used for everything else, and the
electronic device is rarely used at all.
As the guitar can emit many different sounds, it is used in a
variety of styles of music. Ranging from classical, to jazz, to
rock and roll, to blues, to soul, to bluegrass, to funk, to
hardcore, to country, and show tunes
the guitar is a very popular,
yet greatly versatile instrument. Adding to its popularity, some of
the most famous and widely acclaimed musicians in the last century
were guitarists! Jimi Hendrix, John Lennon, Elvis Presley, Robert
Johnson, Eddie Van Halen, Billy Corgan-- all famous guitarists who
will live on in history.
Thus, thats my simplest guide as to what is an acoustic guitar.
