In my view, letting them learn at least an instrument is purely to let them appreciate the beauty of music.

ever watched the movie 'Sound of Music'? great movie... and very moving

i never got the opportunity to enjoy music as fully as a normal person since i got a hearing problem... but i would like my loved ones to have that missed opportunity to learn/enjoy/appreciate it.
