I am not starting this thread to mock christianity, Bro...

I am starting this thread to see what ppl feel abt speaking in tongues...cos I am intrigued by the "mysterious" feel of gibberish speaking...And it's not just confined to Christianity, chinese or Taoist mediums do speak in tongues too, when they get possessed by dieties.

They whole thing is that I wanna find out more abt this "tongues" thing...

When the day of Pentecost came, they(the apostles) were all together in one place. Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. Tongues are in modern day, divided into 2 categories.

One, it is an angelic language meaning that it makes no common sense to another person but it is language inspired by the Holy Spirit inside a christians to communicate with God. Yes it sounds gibberish to others, ev en to the person who speaks it becos it is the Spirit in him/her speaking not him or her.

Two, it is a known language but maybe p r e v iously unknown to the speaker. For example, i may not know French or some African language, then the Spirit came upo n me and then suddenly I get the gift to speak French, that is tongues too. IT can be an oneoff situation i n this case.

and to every tongues speaking, it must be accompanied by the interpretation of the tongues either by one of the people in the congregation with such gift or by the speaker himself.

I must let the rest of you know that to every gift from God, satan likes to come out with his counterfeits and so there do exists demonic tongues as well!

heard of this incident...
in a worship session (with many nationalities).. a few ppl broke into tongues..
it was later found that some of them spoke in other languages they have not encountered before.. and there were ppl in the room that understood the language, i.e. they native toungue

in the bible Jesus promised His followers the Holy spirit, which wil give them power to do God's work in this world. it wil also be a sign to the non believers that God do exist, and to assure the believers that God is with them and that it is a convenant tt God made with us tt we are saved from damnation.

gifts of the holy spirit include speaking in tongues, (not from deities)
which is a language not learnt, heavenly tongue or earthly tongue

healing( touching that person and tt person is healed, cancer crippled, blind, deaf)

(interpretation of tongues) listening and understanding what God wants to say

phrophesying

gift of wisdom

gift of knowledge

delieverence of demons and oppressed ppl.

but these gifts are only given to believers

true…its important to note that the Spirit’s gifts do not include tongues alone. Others are equally important and should be given equal regard and respect.

Yup gotta agree with u....but many members from "charismatic" churches are able to speak in tongues but they are unable to interpret it....then how can they say it's from God??

I believe tongues exist during the apostles time...and the apostles are the last group of ppl with that gift...after them, none have any of that gifts anymore...so today church members can't claim to have that gift anymore

Well i have heard some people speak it....and it's very easy to tell the real from the fake...the fake is gibberish while the real 1's are well only word to describe is beautiful(some may even be singing).However i've only heard it like 3-4 times the other 1000 odd times i hear fakes/bullshit

We cannot say for sure that gift of tongues has ceased in our time if so what biblical backing do we have? spiritual gifts is from God and we as human cannot judge these….real or fake the person speaking it will have to answer to God for it

I do not have the biblical backing, but I heard this through a speaker....well as u say "real or fake the person speaking it will have to answer to God for it ".

There's a chinese speaking assembly in Malaysia...one of their member started speaking in tongues....they found out what he's saying....and it turn out that he's actually cursing God.

yes its up to us to account to God for our every actions. but we hv to test every spirit to see lor. if its from God or not

true...there do exists demonic tongues as well so we cant assume every 'tongues' is from God. In the case of the person cursing God in tongues..he could be demon possessed. Tongues is a gift from God and must be used properly for the common good of the church.

for general knowledge…this coming Sunday (8 June 03) is what we christians call Pentecost Sunday…on the first pentecost as stated in the Bible, Acts 2 the Holy Spirit came upon the believers and the christian church was born….it was also the first time tongues came to be among the disciples and later to other christians.
