Centre officials are unsure when and if Mount Talang will erupt
again, but they believe there is little imminent danger at Lake
Toba.
Dr Fauzi, Head of Earthquake Engineering and Tusnami Division at
the Indonesian National Seismological Centre, said: "The activities
of the volcanic eruptions is triggered by large earthquake. That
can happened. Again, this depends on the status of the volcano. If
the status is very dangerous, then one trigger from the large
earthquake will explode the volcano. If it's not, then there may be
just small explosions."
Asked when the series of earthquakes responsible for the volcanic
activity will stop, the centre says that's difficult to
predict.
Dr Fauzi added: "We cannot predict earthquake but volcanologist can
predict volcanic eruption because the precursor is very
clear."
Currently, more than 90 of the 130 active volcanoes in Indonesia
have monitoring stations.
And with scientists warning of increased seismic activity in the
country, officials will be stepping up their surveillance.
