PASTOR Tan Ye Peng, a founding member of City Harvest Church
(CHC) and Senior Pastor Kong Hee's deputy, is among those assisting
the authorities in an investigation arising from complaints about
the alleged misuse of church funds.
The church in Jurong was told this during the Chinese language
service yesterday. Mr Tan, who heads the Chinese section, was not
present.
Pastor Joseph Ang, who led the service, told the congregation
that both Mr Tan and Mr Kong were resting so they could continue to
assist in the police investigation.
Assuring the congregation that both men were well, Mr Ang
thanked church members for the encouraging messages sent to their
leaders over the week.
'Whatever happens, let us stay united,' he said.
Seventeen individuals are involved in the investigation by the
police and the Commissioner of Charities.
Mr Tan is also the founder of CityCare, a related social
enterprise that conducts training in schools and organises overseas
humanitarian projects.
He was not in when The Straits Times visited his terrace house
in Tanah Merah yesterday.
Mr Kong was also not at any of the services at the weekend at
both the Jurong and Singapore Expo locations.
The services were conducted by Executive Pastor Derek Dunn and
founding member and Pastor Aries Zulkarnain, who also exhorted the
flock to 'stay united as a church, no matter what the outcome
is'.
In his sermons, Mr Dunn told the congregation it is normal in
times of crisis for people to get angry and want to blame
someone.
But, without making reference to the police investigation, he
told them: 'We shouldn't be angry with the authorities.'
He told the Jurong congregation that Singapore is a great
country and has a great government, adding: 'That is why we are
fully cooperative.'
At the Singapore Expo service, he said he had been reading
Twitter and e-mail messages from the congregation, which said they
were praying and fasting.
This, he said, showed the 'maturity of the members of the
church' when handling a crisis.
