"I tell you the truth, it is
hard for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven. Again I tell
you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle
than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God." ~ Matthew
19:23-24
Being rich in itself is not a sin - maybe God wants you to
prosper, what is sinful is when God allows you to prosper, yet you
know no love, keeping wealth for yourself when you have every
chance to share this wealth with those who needs it more than
you.
The rich have often try to pass off being charitable by giving
off sizeable donations; yet a closer look reveals that they often
keep most of the wealth for themselves, only giving what is excess
to them. Much of the wealth they retain is splurged on luxury and
extravagance.
In Mark 12:41-44, Jesus comments on this behaviour:
"Jesus sat down opposite the place where the offerings were put
and watched the crowd putting their money into the temple treasury.
Many rich people threw in large amounts.
But a poor widow came and put in two very small copper coins,
(worth only a fraction of a penny.)
Calling his disciples to him, Jesus said, 'I tell you the truth,
this poor widow has put more into the treasury than all the
others.
They all gave out of their wealth; but she, out of her poverty,
put in everything—all she had to live on.'"
