Ermm, just in case you don't know. Computers are so advanced
these days that a plane can land itself. This system is called the
ILS (Instrument Landing System). The only part where the pilot have
to land manually is at the last 200ft (around that height + or -)
which is usually the
On the contary, pilots can choose to land manualy by themselves.
This gives them a sense of satisfaction tha they achieved
something.
Taking off is not as automatic as landing, but still, it can be
done. There's a device called autothrottle which controls the
engine power, The pilot has to change the setting to take off mode
on the auto throttle and the plane takes off by its own, except
that the pilot has to pull back the yoke (steering on the plane)
when he reaches V2 (take off speed). But most pilots prefer manual
power up as it just feels better.
It's so advance that the plane can auto park at the Terminal gate
using GPS.(so far this is only avaliable on the A380)
Hope my explanation is correct, correct me if I'm wrong.
These days, pilots have a much much easier life than pilots a
decade ago.
Hope this helps!
