How is Catholic grace different from Protestant grace?

On the other hand, I believe that the grace of your God is damnation. But then again, I am an atheist and irreligionist.

Grace features prominently in Catholic theology. For example, Mary is full of grace, and it is by God's grace that Man can achieve salvation.

In fact, Catholic theology does not emphasize on faith in salvation. It emphasizes on grace.

So how is Catholic grace different from Protestant grace? Do Catholics affirm sola gratia?

SingaporeMacross SG

There is emphasis on a 'state of grace'. It describes one's communion with God. Committing venial sins will make one drift away from God. Mortal sins cut the communion for good, until the person is penitent and makes sacramental confession.

It is not always possible to determine one's state of grace. However, examining one's conscience is often the best guide.

Thanks for the contribution.

State of grace.

What is the protestant position on this? Very Happy

vince69 SG

Protestant? which sect?

ok ... my personal understanding.
Grace is unearned, unmerited favor, which means you need not doing anything to qualified to receive it. If you have to do something to earn it, then its not call grace, its called a reward or a salary.

This is a definition of grace.

So how is grace manifested in the protestant theology?

vince69 SG

The Grace of God is manifected in Christ Jesus. Smile

Icemoon SG

vince69 SG

Can someone explain, from the protestant point of view, how is the grace manifested in the believer's life?

So far, I don't see how the protestant grace can affect the believer.

M©+square SG

Honestly?

I don't have the word to explain. I admit i don't have the eloquence.
But in my opinion, grace is a revelation men need to recieve.
It is caught, not taught.

Yes, it's my response to your qns?

The difference in the teaching on grace is simply: what is the role of the Church in the work of grace?

The Elder SG

Grace does not depend on us. If it depends on us, it's not grace but works.

M©+square SG

Yes.

sillyme SG

Fundamentally, it should be the same, i.e. God giving salvation to mankind.

vince69 SG

None except on the receiving end. and its not the work of grace, its the gift of Grace from God. Smile

Here's another difference we all can take note of.

Catholic theology makes a distinction between sanctifying grace and actual grace. Sanctifying grace is the supernatural life of the soul. Actual grace is granted to us by God once in a while as an encouragement and aid for us to perservere.
