Treat others as you would want others to treat you.

A psychologist of sort came to my camp today to give a talk on Neuro Linguistic programming and he asked this question.

most of us agreed that its a good thing, but he said it isn't. its good in a way, but its not the best.

any comments?

if im bitter and full of guilt, i’d want others to treat me badly. so i’ll start treating others negatively in hopes they find me repulsive and start hating me.

its good if everyone applies it.
otherwise its treat someone the way he deserves to be treated.
thats why theres such a thing called punishment and law.

yeah.. today i was told this thinking is very wrong.

because everyone is different, have different personalities.. the correct way is to treat others the way they want to be treated.

because i might like a certain way ppl treat me. but it doesn't mean everyone likes it too.

Jesus meant that you love others the same way you love yourself.

The keyword here is "love" not "treat". Pls read properly. Cool

Personally I don't go by this. I treat others that way is because that's how I want to treat that person. I find it too much of a hassle anticipating or expecting how people treat me.

The commandment is simple yet difficult to obey:

John 13:34 :
"A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.

Maybe that psychologist is not that wise afterall.

So where does this "treat others" come from? Did the psychologist make it up himself? Obviously Jesus never said this phrase as another poster pointed out. If so the psychologist has just pointed out his own flaws. (albeit unintentionally)

Ive read a book on avoiding conflicts.

It says that everybody has their own social styles. The book classifys 4 types of social styles. Ech one with their unigue ways and ways they annoy people. Firstly you have to determine the your own social style, then the opponents', then you would know what they anticipate and hate from you.

If you are interested: How to deal with annoying people. It is a christian published book btw.

Loving someone is not doing what you like but doing what benefits the other person most.

The key to loving someone must begin with understanding. It is almost impossible to love them without understanding them. If we want to love God, we must know who He is. If want to love the people we come in contact with, we must know who they are.

For understanding to come in, there must be a relationship between the two people. There must be communication. For example, when you pat someone on the back and you see uncomfortable, you will remember that he does not like physical affection.

So maybe the psychologist maybe right to a point. Interaction with people on a deeper is not so easy. Any treatment given to a person without love is not the best.
