I hope my explanation can shed some light so you can look at the
issue in another way.
Heard of the Jewish festival of Rosh Hashanah?
Rosh Hashanah is the first and second days of the first Jewish
month of Tishrei. It marks the beginning of the Jewish new year.
The celebration of this holiday is marked with solemnity, as it is
the day on which the whole world is judged for the coming year.
Rosh Hashanah is the birthday of the world, as it was on
this day that G-d created Man on the 6th day of creation.
Every year, on this day, we proclaim G-d as our one and true
King.
This year, (2006-2007/5767) Rosh Hashanah, begins on Friday
evening, September 22, 2006, and continues through Sunday night,
September 24, 2006.

Now, does it strike you that the Jews do not consider the the
creation of the universe as part of the 6000 (actually 5767) years?
