The Crusades
The great series of western holy wars were the Crusades, which lasted from 1095 until 1291 CE. The aim was to capture the sacred places in the Holy Land from the Muslims who lived there, so it was intended as a war to right wrongs done against Christianity.

The first Crusade was started by Pope Urban II in 1095. He raged at the capture of the holy places and the treatment given to Christians, and ordered a war to restore Christianity. He said that the war would have the support of God:

"Let this be your war-cry in combats, because this word is given to you by God. When an armed attack is made upon the enemy, let this one cry be raised by all the soldiers of God: It is the will of God! It is the will of God!"

"...Whoever shall determine upon this holy pilgrimage and shall make his vow to God to that effect and shall offer himself to Him as a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, shall wear the sign of the cross of the Lord on his forehead or on his breast."
The pope also absolved all who took part in the crusade of all their sins.

The first Crusade captured Jerusalem after bitter fighting, and the residents of the city were brutalised and slaughtered by the Christian invaders. The invaders' conduct breached the principles of modern just war ethics, and the massacres still colour Islamic politics today.

In Sri Lanka the 20th century civil war between the mostly Buddhist Sinhalese majority and the Hindu Tamil minority has cost 50,000 lives.

Hmm... I am not for the notion that Christianity should be pacifist...

Peaceful yes,... but pacifist? I am not entirely sure of that notion. Seems to me to come from a materialist ethic in which pain and death are the greatest evils... which they certainly are not.

By right, Chinese practise kung fu mainly for health reasons and defence. But of course, there will be people who use it to fight.

By the way, Shaolin is the temple that practise kung fu in any form, not Shuang Lin or anything.

So all the Chinese literatures depicts the fierce monks from Shaolin are only art-form: for health reasons and defence..great ideas just sound to me like
election 2006 propaganda trying to convince the public that it's not election goodies, but really P.. packages! The world in the news reported it election goodies so they needed correction too! hehehehehehehehehehehe!

Did someone here says the Shaolin help to restore some dynasty in China, so they did with peaceful means, eh? Question

lol .. reminds me of Jiu Mo Zhi from Tian Long Ba Bu. Heath reason indeed. Laughing

I don't know what dynasty they helped to restore, but I heard of Shaolin monks coming to the emperor's rescue during the Tang? Dynasty. I don't know the full s tory, can anyone tell me?

Literature also good leh. Like in Jin Yong, the highest kungfu belongs to the Janitor/Sweeping monk! And the reason given is because he has learnt beyond the sutras.

And in Da Vinci Code .. Dan Brown wrote Bishop Aringarossa to be a good guy, his love for Silas to the end.

All those are not religious wars but violence caused by some Buddhists.

Those who practise Shaolin may not live up to the Shaolin philosophy of non-offensiveness, they may not even be Buddhists.
