For many years, starting in high school, I considered myself a
Christian. Now, I can't say that anymore. I have issues what with
is generally called Christianity. Aside from being a hassle to
type, there are some contridictions in this belief that I just
cannot accept.
First is its claim of being a monotheistic religion. Christianity
is NOT monotheistic. There are 3 seperate entities: the Father
(God), the Holy Ghost, the Son (Jesus). Now most sects of
Christianity claim that these 3 are all of the same entity.
However, this just does not make any sense. If Jesus was in fact
God on Earth, why would he exclaim "My God, my God, why have you
forsaken me?" If Jesus was indeed God, this disconnection makes
absolutely no sense. Was Jesus talking to himself in the 3rd person
with a different identity? Or is it in the 2nd person? Just the
thought of that makes my head hurt.
Was Jesus the son of God? I don't think it really matters one way
or the other. Nowhere does it say that people are supposed to
worship Christ. Jesus considered himself a teacher, and nothing
more. It doesn't take a Christ-worshipper to learn lessons of
morality from his parables.
My biggest gripe with Christianity is the concept of hell, and that
non-believers will go there despite what kind of life they led. A
true Christian believes that people such as Ghandi, who lived
amazingly wholesome and self-sacrificing lives will go to hell
because they rejected Christianity. How can God be an infinitely
forgiving entity, yet condemn people on a matter of semantics? Does
not a life of serving the good of mankind count for anything? Or is
it all about getting some water sprinkled on your head, and eating
some bread and wine?
I reject it mostly because I believe that God truely is a forgiving
presence. One who appreciates people's struggles, abd how they
handle things. Am I going ot be sent to hellfire and damnation for
all of eternity because I've spent my life searching for the
answers instead of accepting them in a convenient, bite-sized
package from somebody else who was handed those same "answers" ? I
think not. If I'm going one way or the other, it's going to be
based on my own merit. I'd rather burn in hell due to my own
failures than go to paradise on somebody else's dime.
