The Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) transport operators undergo
extensive and rigorous training, leveraging on both simulation
systems and practical sessions, in the driving circuit and on the
road, to ensure that they are proficient in handling military
vehicles in various terrains and operating conditions. They then
undergo a stringent and rigorous driver testing regime before being
certified as qualified transport operators. Thereafter, Full-Time
National Servicemen (NSF) transport operators who have fulfilled
the requisite driving mileage and safety standards will be awarded
their Civilian Driving Licence (CDL).
In Apr 2016, the SAF incorporated the basic theory, final theory
and practical driving tests from the Traffic Police driver testing
curriculum to further enhance its driver testing regime. Past
trends also indicated that the experience accumulated through
clocking 4,000km of driving, coupled with continuous training and
coaching, was sufficient to inculcate safe driving habits in
transport operators and for them to be competent drivers.
Consequently, the prerequisite driving mileage to qualify NSF
transport operators for their CDL was revised from 7,000km to
4,000km.
With this change, up to 95% of the NSF transport operators are able
to attain their Class 3 CDL, of which 7 out of 10 are also able to
attain their Class 4 CDL.
