General Election 2011:Why NS?Conscription to Reduce/Abolish?

I dun know why we are sending our boys to do 2 years of NS if we do not have a strong national identity.....to die and defend for what?

Most singaporeans now are struggling to support themselves in a ever higher cost of living here....and we cannot expect our men to fight and die for economics alone....honour, patriotism comes from a defined national sense of belonging

Can’t help it, without NS, if skali some country want to attack us, they can and there is nothing to stop them from looting our country. China people can go back to China, India people can go back to India, we locals go where when we no more country???

I just think maybe NS can be shorter, if not waste 2 years of our lives. Could have possibly cut short to 1 year after teaching us how to use weapons and warfare.

Ns should stay.
Every country needs own defence, need to have army.
But, the problem is, why 2 yrs of ns?
The most appropriate is 1 yr: 3 month basic bmt, 3 month specialised training, 6 month deployment. Shouldnt it better this way?
Why 2 yrs which I really dont understand.

the gov uses old method of conscription dating back at that time in 1960s which was universal 2.5 years or so.since then nothing much has changed after 50 odd years.

time is precious in one year u can learn many thing in industries....in 6 months commerical production prototypes could be built from scratch.....software design completed n tested......companiesan be formed.... copyrights approved.....

gov finds it cheaper i guess to put kids in barracks for 2 years instead of libraries of knowledge for 2 years.

take ferinstance in their combat training...u dun need to goto range all the time....theres a Ps2 game and pc games which are as good as the real thing and sharpens combat skills too.....and adds much realism at that too.

actually i dunno what to make of 2 years ns....u can stay there for 20 years and what will u learn over there except describing something close to a space invader games?

Parents with boys going to ns will fear for their safety.

And parents heart pain to see boys go to jail for 2 yrs.

Do you think the parents will cast the votes for pap?

Now the opposition wanted to push the ns to 1 yr, but can they?

With the ever increasing cost of living, costs of bills rises (without falling), the pap still want the boys to do jail term for 2 yrs? Shouldnt the boys come out from jail (1 yr) and get the ball rolling (working)??? And take up night courses to upgrade themselves to move up the coporate world which is besiged with prs and foreigers?

Do pap want our boys to be a second class citizen?

Reminds me of the movie the rock reflection of how governments seems to care less about their men dying and being politically correct....count ourselves lucky we do not send our boys to warzone:(
