Chief of Army (COA), MG Desmond Kuek visited the School of Infantry Specialists (SISPEC) on 19 July to join the trainees for a 22-kilometre run. The run was more than just a normal run to keep fit it carried extra significance as the trainees' Advanced Section Leader Course graduation run.

The 22-km run takes the trainees around the island of Pulau Tekong and past landmarks and places that they would be familiar with from their Basic Military Training (BMT) and SISPEC experiences. The trainees thus get to relive the journey they have taken so far in the Army.

Past the halfway mark, the trainees are reminded that it is a mind game they have to overcome. Nearing the end of the run, the trainees will their bodies on through a gruelling uphill run before they finally reach the finish line at SISPEC. Commanding Officer of SISPEC, LTC Ng Heng Chew said, Through the run, we want to send a message to the trainees: that the mind is very powerful. After the run, they come out with a tremendous sense of achievement.

CPL Alan Phua said, As I ran, it was a time to recap all I did in BMT, and a time to understand how much I've grown. CPL Calvin Ng also noted, The run has taught us how to lead our men and how to mentally and physically prepare them. Hopefully they can also look up to us and say, if our instructor can do it, we can do it as well!

At the end of the run, COA congratulated the sergeants-to-be on finishing the run. He said, Soon you will be in charge of other soldiers their welfare, their lives. This run is something that you can remember and take out of Pulau Tekong, which can define your experience in SISPEC.

*bah* CPL Alan Phua and Alvin Ng obviously have not been for AHM before.

'The run has taught us how to lead our men...etc etc...'

Lip Service. Probably about the most useful thing to take out of SISPEC. Wink Not to diss SISPEC; I learnt quite a bit of things, toyed with more and enjoyed most of it. But it's the damn silly things and 'significant' nonsense that I think is an awful waste of time.

actually the things most reporter wrote in the ariticle may not be excatly what the interviewee said. sometimes what they said is made out by the reporter. Laughing

Hendon SG

Am I expected to bring the white waterbottle and sling bag when I first report to SISPEC?

Also, how long, if any, is the blocked leave after BSLC while waiting for ASLC/OCS/other units.

I really do wish to crossover to OCS from SISPEC, and will bloody work hard for it. I signed a tech spec E contract only to find out that the contract didn't go through on posting day when I saw SISPEC as my reporting camp. SAF loves to spring surprises like this.

Hellraiza SG

to be honest. I think an ADF private knows more and can lead better than a SISPEC 3SG.

Shotgun SG

This i disagree. Not every ADF men is that bright. Not every SISPEC trained Sect comd is a capable leader either.

This is where our system has failed. Failure to recognise men with leadership potential and equipping them to lead. Failure to recognise men who CAN'T lead and sending them to Sispec and God help us, OCS.

Rockhound SG

this is subjective on experience...........

Do bslc give out gold and sliver bayonet at the end of the course??

nomood SG

I don't think the system has failed. The system operates on a very social level; ie: your qualifications.

it's quite naive to think that someone with only o levels cert can expect to cliimb as fast as, or even 1/2 as fast as someone else with degree/diploma qualification.

Anyway I'm strongly for mantaining a high degree/diploma officer/spec ratio to men. You can't run the army based on leadership alone; the army isn't a triad. though some would argue otherwise for the case of adf.

ignorantsoup SG

Just for your info, 3SG Alan Phua has gone to the AHM already..anyway what has the AHM got to do with the 22km run? As you said, its lip service. With the COA there, what do you say? That "oh I learn nothing and i just run?" dun b jealous juz becuz u cannot be interviewed. tsk..

fyi again, I'm the same batch as those CPLs so I understand them better than you do.

iveco SG

Just curious, what route does an ADA specialist take? What happens to them after BSLC?

LazerLordz SG

There are things both have learnt that other have not.Can you compare a OETI 3SG to a Tradoc OPFOR CPL?Not a fair comparison.

sypders SG

haha, i guess i'm the correct person to ans this, since i'm a ada spec....

anyway, after your bslc, u will be posted to air force school, in short AFS. This is where you will spent another 9 weeks of training on your specialised weapon, it depend on the intake as well. If you are a regular, aim for the I-hawk, better career ...but i don't think u can choose that.

so after 9 weeks of specialised weapon training (i-hawk, 35mm AA, Mistral, RBS), the regulars will embarked another OJT technical training where they are being trained by the senior techs. Once you pass the course, then u will be posted as a detachment specialist (section leader) and usually, the best performance will be chosen as Flight Sergeant Major.

if you are a NSF, then after the 9 weeks of training, you will also be taught some light OJT training too. then service your weapon on a weekly basis and play some war game (wait and shoot game) and till u ORD loh

banzie SG

For ADA you'll be posted to AFS. Enjoy one week of holiday orientation and suffer as the worst of all life form there. If you think the basic phrase is tough... wait till you see the advance. Haha. After that no much glory and posted to unit. Unit was ok compared to the other vocation.

Depend where you posted to if you posted to Tengah, the place sucks but life is good. If you posted to chongpang... the other way round haha.

[w][e][i] SG

i'm posted to airforce sch as a ADWS after my bslc and currently enjoying the 1 week AOP... Mr. Green juz found out that i will be trained to operate the I-Hawk..

Question here... when i pass out and posted to unit, do i have men under me?? or the spec will become the men and command by the officer?? Neutral

Quirinus SG

NOTE:
With effect from 19/12/2005, all subsequent SISPEC trainee batches will report to Pasir Laba camp, Specialist and Warrant Officer Institute, SISPEC, for training.
