To sum up the 6th week of my BMT life...
A rather hectic and tiring week; with field camp and the
aftermath.
Day 1, we marched 6km with our barang barang to the outfield
location, set up the bashat and dug some drainage. Had some combat
training, fired some blank rounds and had a lot of IAs. Day 1 was a
bolt from the blue; the jungle was flabbergasting even for an
adventurer like me.
Mud, stench, creepy-crawlies-I've-never-seen, behemoth grasshoppers
and whatsnot... even a dog?
Day 2, we had more combat/sentry trainings - more blanks, IAs and
thunderflashes. Combat rations were like lucky dips, get the pasta
packages and you strike first prize; the others and your stomach
gets a rollercoaster ride
It rained, rained and rained... I prayed, prayed and prayed... God
didn't answer; but the crickets did
Day 3, it was when we dug the shellscape. Again, it was like a
lucky dip - get the muddy area and first prize; the rocky ground
and you get grumbly. 1, 2, 1, 2, 1, 2 ,1, 2... Up and down went our
ET blades; I dug through the hard surfaces like a mindless robot,
programmed for this. In my mind, I was hymming Silent Night... and after 5 long hours
of Silent Night, the
trench was done... so was my body...
No, we didn't get to sleep in the trench that night: we slept in
our bashat, while the merciless skies poured on us. The night was
bitterly cold... blue yonder moon.... after the callous rain...

Day 4, the last mile of the field camp. The 80m leopard crawl under
the barded wires was a walk in the park. Determined to hurry home;
to reunite with loved ones and close friends... We crawled like
holy infants
After which, I carried 3 fieldpacks and marched 6km back to coy
line (If 1 field pack is 20+ kg and I was lugging on 3, my rifle
and weariness... if you ask me, I don't know how I made it back
)
I'm not planning to bore anyone with the washing up and stuff... I
shalt end here
