you may not adjust well to the Hokkien peng on the army side
either.
I do not know how the SCDF system works but if it's similar to the
SAF one, mono-intakers enlist together with the idea of staying
together throughout NS & reservist. In other words, some 22
years (until you turn 40). The only chance to formally "detour" out
is after BMT, when the unit declines to retain you for whatever
reason. Thereafter, the possibilities are all but fleeting: get
downgraded, sign on with another military arm, work overseas after
NS, posted to holding list for reservist, etc.
