For me, any weapon should be handled by an adult, and have undergone a psychological evaluation.

i fired m16 during my ncc time too.

i guess its because those kids do not understand the dangers of a live weapon and hence did not follow safety instructions.

Don't mind if i contribute a little bit?

1) Upon receiving weapon [ whether from armskote or other sources ], WEAPON CHECK CLEAR!
2) Finger off the trigger AT ALL TIMES.
3) Weapon ALWAYS pointed downwards [unless contacted or Range or whatever then different story liao la, lols ]
4) Safety ON

you obey this 4 rules and nothing will go wrong, period. Laughing

When you check clear, aim into the sky and away from crowds, buildings and do NOT do it in a training shed. Go out of the shed.

when check clear...pls remove the magazine

should a weapon be well oiled?

i used to oil thickly on the request of instructors but once in unit...i use my fingers to just oil thinly....not too much that it is gross to handle and not too little that rust develops

Actually, over oiling traps dirt. If in an actual firefight and you are outnumbered, several safety measure go out the window for me.( if using m16a) I got a jam and I don't yell IA, I fire a round into the air and move away from my last firing position. That shot fired should help clear the chamber, if it doesn't, you should get a chamber explosion which is very bad. At least, if you are still alive, you can get out your ET tool and bayonet to close and fight instead of being caught pants down trying to clear the jam.

You are supposed to clear all the oil that comes in contact with the air produced by the combustion as the shot is fired such as the barrel insides. Prior to firing.

In case you are wondering what if no time to remove the oil, you don't apply the oil if the weapon is to be kept in readiness state.
