Hmm..that comment was simply unwarranted and does not contribute to any part of this discussion.

Big headed?? I feel it's protecting his men. of course there's a fine line between over-defending which would be deemed abuse of authority and the pure concern of the welfare of his guy.

Everyone knows that not improper bearing is an offence and that we know equally better that the rules can NOT be followed like a bible. Thins must always be seen in context so there is this flexibility to go "around" the rulebook at times. So as an officer, it's his duty to take care of the welfare of his guys. The fact that he is given the power to employ that flexibility would warrant him to look at things and decide on what is right and wrong. So clearly he felt that the punishment was inappropriate and that TS should NOT be asked to carry heavy loads. So how can one say that he is childish or whatsoever.

But to look at this situation from other angles would perhaps show that the officer had no respect for the csm. But how knows what this situation is. Maybe he didn't command at all any respect in the first place. That's hypothetical... So my point is...rules and written by humans..bending the rules does not imply defiance or whatsoever. Cheers

Surely you jest.

This is an army, not Singapore Idol. Leaders who go out to be popular are ineffective - this 2LT has traded competence (i.e. enforcing and supporting the discipline that any army requires, which is his job as an officer) for being buddy-buddy with his men. Respect and popularity may coexist, but they are decidedly not interchangeable.

TS must have a sad life in the army. or maybe hasnt encountered nsf officers who are big time arseholes.

from my POV, that nsf 2lt is jus trying to show off his power. or maybe all along, he had some displeasure against this WO and can't do anything abt it. using this issue as a way to deal with him. whatever it is, i feel that many young officers nowadays are only substandard, not the ones everyone used to see and respect. heck, i've even seen pes c officers cuz of some small prob. 1 even admit he keng to downgrade, so that he can slack during reservist.

WOs are the ppl working on the ground with the nsfs and have a wealth of experience with them, no matter whether it's their jobscope or dealing with ppl. i feel that they shld be given the due respect.

I had encountered a similar case during my active days. One of my men was downgraded with back injury, due to sloppy bearing turn out, he was punished with confinement over sunday as well. He was told to clear out the recreation room which was filled with furniture and other odds and bits.

He approached me lamenting his back injury.I agreed with him that he could not do the back breaking work, I spoke to our CSM in his office and he gave him 5 boxes of filing & paper work to do instead over the weekend.

Personally i feel that the YSL brash actions to be popular will be fruitful,but as an effective leader, he have failed..

Personal turn out is important and it speaks volumes of the person's pride and discipline in ensuring his bearing is correct of a soldier.And I'm too quite particular about personal turn out. Mr. Green

Some regulars just think they are some big shots (in the army). of course, to the rest of us who 'suffered' under their injustice, we just brushed them off as somebody who cannot make it in the society and therefore sign on as specialists.

Wonder y specialOps is so furious about this matter? His choice of words are harsh and mean. Maybe he is a SAF specialists/WO too.

What are so many people inside camp on a weekend? _lol My unit time, those kena confinement just report to COS every two hours. They would often beg to stay inside the company-line office instead, cuz it was lonely inside the bunk & the office usually had a portable TV & newspapers. The most siong is having the BOS arrow them for area-cleaning.

He is definitely not an Officer or a Gentleman but he doesnt have to worry about going to combat with his slacked men or getting shot in the back cuz the TS is probably talking about BMT life.As for the CSM, he must not abuse his power also.During my time we get confined for just about anything and everything and it was like weekend hard labor in a gulag where we all shared the same first name,it was 'Chee Bye'. Agreed. The CSM may sound wrong but be reminded that this is coming from one side so it tends to distort some facts. Discipline should have been upheld and such behaviour of trying to belittle the instructions of appointment holders do not reflect well on the discipline of the 2LT.

Specialist Regulars can only recommend extras? Which means if he wana give extra to ppl under him he needs to seek OC commander?

So that means for us we can talk to the OC if we feel that the extra shouldnt be given to us?

There is this thing in the SAF called "Going through proper channel" which means that the OC would not waste his time to see you unless it is really important (to him).

apparanetly in my camp we are on better terms with our OC than our regular specs such that we are able to communicate better to them. Even our OC knows how screw up this regular is Confused

I'm a 3SG (NS) by the way...for those who asked..

specialists and Warrant Officers (regular or NSF or NSmen) can recommend extra, a commissioned officer can directly issue out or approve recommended extras.

Extra duties and confinements are informal punishments, to be recorded clearly in a book.

Corporal punishment however, such as push ups, etc. can be given by any 3SG and above to men directly under their command, no need officer approval, but subject to be within guidelines.
