I think just because they are worn on the left side doesn't mean its not an aiguillette.

Those worn by bandsmen ARE aiguillettes. Just simpler version, and not in gold, obviously.

The following officers are entitled to wear the aiguillette:

1. Chief of Defense Force (CDF) , whilst in No 1, 2 and 5 dress
2. Aide-De-Camp (ADC) to the President
3. Honourary ADC to the President
4. Military Attache (MA) and Assistant MA
5. Director of Music during band performance
6. MA/SO to CDF & Service Chiefs

but i'm not sure why is i on the left. mayb it used to be on the left for director of music? anyone knows?

i think it's something like runner? their right-hand man or aides.

anyway to ur hairy thing for the SAF band epaulette, they're called fringes. Traditionally, all epaulettes have fringes. The more fringes u have, the higher ranking u are.

From what i know, SAF band is somewhat orientated to the traditional British band customs. I read that the present Drum Major Staff and shoulder belt also originate from past British Army. So i guess tt's why the epaulettes with fringes remain in SAF band.

Obviously we cannot remain the fringes for the our soldiers. or else so hairy can trap alot spiders during out field. haha Laughing

Erm, ok. If you want to be anal and technical about it, then sure, let's only classify those worn by officers under aiguillettes. Lol.

haha well. i'm a regimental person and i think we shld stick to what the word refers to only, or else wad's the point of the aiguillette being so highly prestigious.

but my previous post is to point out tt SAF Band still uses tradional British customs. Hence i used the older term of Sash (belt) and Mace (staff).

Except for the Directors of Music, I think the rest of the band wears a lanyard. Its like those old days when the policemen wore shorts, they have a whistle in the front top pocket tied to a lanyard on the shoulders. This is to prevent 1206 of the whistle. Those days, the whistle must be damned expensive.

I really wouldn't call what they wear lanyards. Lanyards are functional items, while those worn by bandsmen are ornamental dress items. I'd say them to be closer to aiguillettes than lanyards.

I've dug around the net and found the term "dress cord". That said though, some places, they are called aiguillettes as well.
