social anxiety, its like extreme shyness that affects
communication and social interaction, it may be caused by genetics,
societal/environmental pressures when young or due to chemical
imbalances in the mind. Typically, people with social anxiety are
never able to fully relax in the presence of other people.
So far I get the impression that the most common type of treatment
is behavioural-cognitive, it focuses on changing thoughts in order
to solve psychological and personality problems.
personally, my condition isn't that bad to the point that i'm
depressed and going to commit suicide although it does affect me
everyday whether i'm commuting on public transport, in camp,
outside in public or talking to unfamiliar people.
typical scenarios/characteristics:
-being accused of homosexuality for being overly quiet
-stammering, mumbling, trembling (panic attack) when asked to speak
infront of an audience, even if the number of people present is
small
-blushing,sweating unprovoked in the mere presence of people
-being self conscious
-unable to befriend others
-facial muscles twitching when trying to smile and appear friendly
to others
-being timid and hence taken advantage of, i.e. bulled
generally, people with social anxiety will be stressed out when
interacting with unfamiliar people.
social anxiety is fairly common, according to wiki... 10% of the
population meets its criteria.
My main concern is, if i openly seek treatment will it leave a
permanent record? i'm not interested in kenging, infact i
dont want to keng because if it happens i'll just become an office
orderly who'll be treated like a dog. i feel that i can take the
training both physically and mentally and then go on to fulfillmy
role in the unit, i just want to undergo treatment and get
on with my life. hope i made myself clear.
and if anybody wants to know how long i've had this condition, i
guess its since i was a child but it got worse over the
years.
Don't worry about your problem. If you can overcome it yourself
it would be great, if it were so bad you need medical help you
might not be posting on this forum now.
May I know if you've taken the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTi)
and what is your profile? (You can try some free ones on the
internet)
