Speaker of Parliament and Jurong GRC MP Halimah Yacob has urged
Singaporeans to stay home over the long National Day weekend from
August 7-10.
She hopes Singaporeans would take the time to celebrate
together.
Madam Halimah said, “My appeal to Singaporeans is to please stay in
Singapore during the long weekend. I understand that Singaporeans
take the opportunity during periods of long weekends to chill out
with their families overseas.”
“On other occasions, that’s all right but on this occasion I hope
that they will stay in Singapore and really celebrate together as a
nation. It will be very sad if a quarter of Singapore goes
overseas to celebrate,” she added.
She also hopes that the travel industry will support her call.
“I know the travel business will be affected but I hope they will
understand and see the reason why we are making this call. In
Singapore, the government does not declare public holidays
willingly, it is really something that they thought about
carefully,” she said.
“It is important that everybody come together and celebrate in
their own way together with family, friends and neighbours and then
really we have that real meaning of being part of a nation.”
On Saturday (14 Mar), President Tony Tan declared that Singapore
will have an additional holiday on 7 Aug (Friday), as part of SG50
“birthday celebrations”.
With Monday already a holiday since National Day (9 Aug) falls on
Sunday this year, Singapore will have a 4-day “Jubilee Weekend”
from 7 to 10 August (Fri to Mon).
President Tan also hopes that Singaporeans will take part in the
many activities in Singapore, lined up by the government during the
long “Jubilee Weekend”.
In a Facebook posting, Education Minister Heng Swee Kiat likewise,
tried to persuade Singaporeans to participate in the long-weekend
activities in Singapore. He said that public attractions and
facilities will have “special concessions” during the period.
However, quite a number of netizens are already planning to take
advantage of the long weekend to go for a short holiday outside
Singapore:
Rykel
Lim: Time for many people to plan their SG50
Jubilee holiday celebration… Overseas!
Gabriel
Goh: Well, I guess a lot of Singaporeans will be
celebrating SG50! Overseas!!!

Mdm Halimah has said she hopes the travel industry will support her
call, presumably, not to offer too many tour packages enticing
Singaporeans to leave the country during the “Jubilee Weekend”.
If too many Singaporeans are planning to leave, would the Govt
start to ban travel agencies from selling overseas tour packages to
Singaporeans during that period?
What do you think?
