2nd Singapore Infantry Brigade is heliborne
All Guards are heliborne

What is the difference between the Guards and infantry now? (Pls don't give me all the stupid examples like beret colour). They seem to do the same thing nowadays. Except maybe GDS got water infiltration?

mhcampboy SG

Guards heliborne.

Infantry take helicopter just to be deployed... Laughing

I_love_my_toilet SG

guardsman do rappelling ma ?

infantry wait for helicopters to land 1st then they alight ?

guards is elite infantry
infantry is infantry

the diff is a more elite status give to GDS. Mr. Green
by their conversion course they need to go thru
heliborne training
lightstrike coy

guardsmen seems to be "giving out" more pride sia.

But im not fm GDS

Short Ninja SG

In the past a Guardsman is sometimes teasingly known as the Half-Farked Commando and Soldiers from Changi Point were known as Full-Farked Commandos.Infantry Rifleman dont even get BJs Mr. Green

chanjyj SG

I know bout the rappelling, but.. (this one need expert to tell me liao)

What's the advatage of rappelling from heli compared to normal entry-exit of helicopter?

And btw will the rappelling take place under enemy fire?

pwnz0r SG

'elite' Laughing

Don't let other countries here this. They might laugh until concuss.

SpecOps87 SG

Advantage of rapplling from a helo is that you can drop a number of guys down virtually any where as you do not require the helo to find a landing spot, at most just a place for your guardsmen to rappel to. And you get to fly off the moment the guys are on the ground. If you land, you actually take longer and have a possibility of being grounded. I suppose a well-trained group can take less then 10secs to be fully deployed as opposed to a helo landing and the troops getting out.

Short Ninja SG

There some reasons why helicopters would not land to disembark troops

1) hot landing zone......meaning enemy is everywhere
2)suspected mines on landing points/landing zone
3)Terrain not suitable for landing

If rapelling should take place under enemy fire......you all dont stand a chance (especially the helicopter)

Short Ninja SG

In training and in combat you cant possibly do it all in 10sec unless the Farking pilot releases the RAD prematurely and that has been done resulting in deaths Rolling Eyes

acwire_2125 SG

Well, I do beleive Guards will attack under enemy fire, they just have to come down quick from the heli.

In military terms, Guards are known as heli-borne. You might see them as elites of infantry as commandos are, but their main differences are in their missions. Infantry’s main mission in modern days are to “hold” a certain ground and other “normal” missions. Commandos specialised in special ops behind enemies line. Guards are trained to conduct “raids” which is “SAF” “Shoot and fuckoff”. Notably, the SAF is actually quite well-known among neighbouring countries’ military field for its ability in conducting raiding operations. Much of this reputation will of course has to be credited to the Guards.

Short Ninja SG

I have no idea about what the Guards of today are about but I think they are given the same publicity & limelight the Commandos had in the 80s.As for training in all other vocations,I think SAF has taken a few steps up.So I believe the Infantry is capable of doing what the Guards did 20 years ago.Someone wrote before about SAF ability to move quick at night but so are the other Armed Forces of South East Asia.

My bad...timing over-exaggerated. Think 10secs is more suited for fast-roping.Lol, ala US Ranger style

heliborn just a term used. so to say 2SIR a heliborn unit is not wrong.

rappelling and roping is a technic used to despatch, deploy troops when the helicopter still hovering in mid air.

so to say GUARDS are train in this technics to facilitate it OPS.

rappelling are at 80ft and above and not over 120ft while roping at 20ft and above and not over 60ft. ie to say it will depend where and what type of vegetation is the deployment area.

kotay SG

That is so wrong I don't even know where to start.

I once had a conversation with some friends who asked me what Guards unit do ... something more indepth than the often quoted abilities of "heliborne" and "coastal hooks" ... I was about to reply than realised that while not exactly a state secret, it is certainly restricted info and if a fellow NS man doesn't know, then maybe that's the way it should stay ... unless of course there is open source info declaring the mission tasking of a typical Guards unit.

Suffice to say "Shoot & FO" is far from it ... try "between a rock and a hard place" Wink

tarutaru SG

some said guards are underpaid commandos

LazerLordz SG

Agree with you, while any non-guardsman can get enough information through publicly available equip orbat and loadout and start a discussion based on the usual anecdotal tales, anything else, should stay inside.

sir sickolot II SG

The 2nd Singapore Infantry brigade is not exactly a heli-borne brigade.

it is able to do heli-borne ops, although to a limited capacity. It is still, strictly speaking, an infantry brigade.

Only 7SIB is a Guards Brigade. Perhaps they do heliborne ops.

Although I must comment that the 2SIB Logo has a super puma and golden wings, reflective of the heli-borne capability the unit has, or once had.

Cheers

This was what I was really trying to get at-If landing zone is hot surely all satay what...

Mr. Green So... Using GDS or infantry no diff anymore right? Laughing

I think in the past the GDS were really more "elite". The current generation of GDS seem to be infantry with a higher fitness level (Evident by GCC) that's all? Anyone here who's a NSF and can tell me what you all do now?

Wikipedia said they did terminal air guidance Shocked I dunno how accurate that thing is Rolling Eyes
