Nonsense.
The purpose of having Guards is to have a corps of infantry capable
of air mobile operations. It's true, Guards are better trained in
some aspects and have a reputation of being "elite" but if you
think that one brigade of active Guardsmen and a couple more of
Reservists Guards can tackle an entire front, you must be
crazy.
The purpose of the Infantry is always to take and hold ground. Only
boots on the ground can conquer terrain and this is precisely why
we have so much infantry. If you read about conflicts raging round
the world today, you'll find that the Infantry are bearing the
brunt of the work especially in areas of Urban Terrain (you can't
clear a building with a tank).
In Singapore, the Infantry are not well recognised and they are not
as glamorous as Guards/Commandos. In my opinion, the Infantry is
one formation that loses out on the better talents who opt to sign
on because the best always aim for the fancy stuff like Guards,
Commandos & Armour. However, the latest initiatives within the
Infantry like POI, Urban warfare and the new Combined Arms
Initiatives (I can't elaborate since it's still Classified) will go
some way in raising the profile of the Infantry.
What ever the case, if we ever go to war, it won't be the Guards,
Commandos or Armour that raises the flag of victory, it'll be the
infantry: the poor bloody, muddy, unglamorous, unappreciated
infantry.
