KoolKool SG I know of one guy who spoke mainly English because of his mixed parentage. He spoke Mandarin only because that subject was taught in school. PC always gives instructions in hokkien. And when the PC says 'move', he is the only standing around, lost, blur like sotong, always kana tekan. That's a long time ago .............. but he still went through NS. So language should not be a barrier. Its just inconvenient without the proper means of comms.
Gordonator SG ya this reminds me. there used to be malaysian guy who was the same course as me, he couldn't understand a word of english, can't read, can't write, can't talk. miracle he even managed to pass the course. after the course he was posted to the same unit as me. he was really a screwed up person. totally unmotivated in his job, bo-chup and give people attitude, his face see liao like want to give him a good beating that type. luckily he was posted out a few days later. what a relief.
air380 SG i think every good commander will make an effort to reach out to such men in their own ways.
leo-kun SG army still speak chinese unless you post to MTL where most mats are there and you have no one to talk to..
798 SG dun worry, can still speak in mandarin or hokkien, my majors usually spoke to me in mandarin. unless ur head is non-chinese.
aznmild SG hahaha doesn’t matter.. my platoon mate was like this chinese PR person as well. he got away with most of the stuff like bringing chargers in and stuff, he just had to say “i don’t understand english”
